“Yeah, tomorrow works. We need to talk about Cartwright.”

“What about Cartwright?”

“Lunch then. Bye, and my regards to your girl.”

“Bye.” I ignored the comment about Jennifer—denying it wouldn’t have helped. I put the phone away.

Jennifer looked up. “You can go talk to her if you need to. I’ll be fine.”

I pulled her along the path. “You’re my priority tonight. She can wait till tomorrow.”

“Want to talk about it?”

I shook my head. The mention of Cartwright had ruined my mood, and I needed a dose of my Angel.

Jennifer

We ambleddown the path in silence.

“It’s nothing,” Dennis finally said. “Serena wants to talk about Cartwright, and nothing having to do with that family ever ends up being good news.”

Cartwright had been a thorn in his side, and now it was affecting his sister somehow.

“Are you worried about the meeting?”

Cartwright had requested a meeting with Dennis, and so far he’d put them off.

“Worriedisn’t the right word.”

“Nervous?”

“Yeah, that works. I have to fend him off, or a lot of people will pay the price.”

As usual, Dennis was focused on the effect others would feel, not what it would cost him.

When we got back to the house, I went to get some wine. “White or red?”

He picked up the remote. “White.”

“Sweet or dry?” That was as far as my wine knowledge went, although Dennis was teaching me a little more every week.

“Not sweet.”

I pulled out a bottle of pinot grigio he’d promised wasn’t sweet and unwrapped the foil top.

Dennis scrolled through movie choices. “What do you feel like?”

I put the lip of the bottle up to the wine opener and squeezed the grips to hold it. “Something light and funny.”

We’d watched one of the Fast and Furious movies last night, and a change would be good. I pulled the handle forward, and in a quick move, the opener threaded the corkscrew in and pulled the cork out.

“How’sMiss Congeniality?”

“Works for me.” I poured the glasses and brought them over.

As I snuggled in next to my man, the movie started to play.
