“Cindy said you weren’t feeling well. Anything I can do?”

There was no right answer to that question.

“No. I just shouldn’t have had the leftover shrimp,” I lied.

What was one more lie on top of what I’d already done to hurt him?

I heard the sound of a door closing.

“I could come over tonight, if you feel like breaking our rules.”

“That’s sweet, but I’ll be okay by tomorrow.”

Another lie. I’d have to find a way to tell him, and that couldn’t happen without a face to face—and without me owning up to what I’d done.

The worst part of all this kept gnawing at me.

Dad had been trying to fix my bike when it had happened.

Chapter 31

Dennis

(Four Days Later)

Finally it was Friday. The week was almost over, and tonight I could relax across the dinner table from my girl.

Mid-morning, Ed Baird was at my door.

“Do you have a sec?” he asked. “I have something on that matter you asked me to look into.”

I waved him in.

He closed the door behind him and brought a folder to my desk. “I think I found the conduit to Cartwright.” He took a seat.

I leaned forward. This could turn out to be a much better week if we had a lead on Cartwright. “Go ahead.”

“We spent a lot of time and effort on this last week.”

“I’m sure you did. Now what did you find?” I’d save the back patting for later.

He pulled out a photo and laid it on my desk. The photo wasn’t very good quality—actually it was pretty crappy.

I looked up from the picture. “What am I looking at?”

He pointed to the window of the restaurant. “These two women having lunch. One is a girl who works here, and she’s meeting with a person from Cartwright’s firm.”

“Who?”

“The lady’s name is Suzanne Murtog.” He pulled out another picture. This one was clearer, of a woman going into a building.

“But I don’t see her face.”

“It’s the same woman from the restaurant, I guarantee it. And Cartwright has an office on the fourteenth floor of that building.”

“I meant who did she meet with?”

“Jennifer Hanley.”
