Dennis didn’t answer him, instead he kissed my neck. “It’s been hard.”

“Hard is good.”

He slapped my butt lightly. “I don’t want to be the mean boss anymore.”

Those were the words I needed to hear—the words I’d hoped for.

“I missed you too.”

Insisting on the mean boss had been my mistake.

Chapter 29

Dennis

I rolledover Saturday morning to find Jennifer staring at me. “Have you been awake long?”

She stroked a few hairs behind my ear, her sweet smile filling her face. “No. Just enjoying it here and listening to the waves.”

The window was cracked open, and the sound of the ocean beyond the beach was soft, but distinct.

I pulled her toward me. “Figure anything out?” I placed a kiss on her forehead.

She nodded, and her hand came behind my head. “Yeah. I don’t like your mean boss impression anymore.”

It was tough to carry off, but I’d tried hard. “I thought I was doing it perfectly.”

“Maybe you were, but it’s not you, and I shouldn’t have asked for it.”

“So what, then?”

Her fingers stroked my cheek. “Can’t we just be like normal employees? Hide our feelings? Can you ignore me without being mean?”

“That might make it easier for people to figure out. Are you okay with that?”

“I guess?”

I kissed her again. “You need to be sure, Angel, because it’s not something we can undo.”

“I think I am.”

“Thinkdoesn’t cut it. You are, or you aren’t.”

She took in a deep breath, as if she were preparing to step off a high cliff. “I am.”

No doubt the statement was like jumping off into the unknown for her.

“That’s good, because I wasn’t sure how much longer I could keep up ‘mean boss’ without Cindy killing me.”

Jennifer rolled over to go to the bathroom.

I watched her and realized I wasn’t only fixated on the bob of her tits or the sway of her ass, but the whole woman. When she returned, I couldn’t help but smile. It wasn’t that I didn’t enjoy the bounce of her tits as she approached, but she was more than the sum of her physical assets—more than her smile or her wit. In an impossibly short time, I’d come to appreciate so much about her. How had that happened?

She stopped. “What?”

“Just thinking.”

“Don’t wear yourself out.” She picked up her panties from last night and pulled them on. “I have to go.”
