The waitress brought over their drinks, and Mac took a sip of his before he answered. “St. Augustine.”

Alex smiled. “Nice. Although, I don’t think I get any work done. St. Augustine is beautiful and filled with so much history. What made you pick there?”

Mac grinned. “For the same reasons you just stated. And I grew up there.”

“Do you still have family there?”

“No. I was an only child, and my parents died a few years ago,” he explained.

“I’m sorry to hear that,” she offered.

“Me too,” he replied rather terse but not directed at her. She sensed there was more to that story, and she wasn’t going to press the issue.

“Well, maybe Ace and I’ll visit one day when we get a break.”

He smiled. “Absolutely.” He looked at Tink then back to her. “You both have an open invitation. I’ve got plenty of room and would love to host you guys.” He smirked. “Maybe I’ll give Ace a tour of our headquarters.”

Alex laughed. “If you were thinking of recruiting him, you’ll probably be waiting a few years. Ace is committed to his team, and I don’t see him leaving the teams any time soon. At least not if he can help it.”

Mac grinned. “Hey, a guy’s gotta try.”

“Yes, they do.”

???

As the evening went off, Alex was enjoying herself. She really liked Mac. He was a unique character. Even though he conversed, at times, he appeared to be reserved.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Tink uttered from across the table as he looked at something over Alex’s shoulder. Before she could ask what was wrong, he excused himself.

She turned and tried to follow him with her eyes, but he disappeared over by the bar. She turned around and looked at Mac.

“That was weird,” she said, and Mac nodded.

While she and Mac waited for Tink to return, they talked more about her Foundation.

“What you’re doing is vital to our men and women and is commendable,” he told her.

“Thank you. It’s something close to me.”

“You’re dad would be so proud of you. He was an honorable man.”

She didn’t know how to respond because her emotions were starting to choke her up, so she offered him a smile. He seemed to understand.

He then looked around.

“Do you think maybe we should go look for him?”

Alex scanned the restaurant, and she didn’t see him either. They had already paid the bill.

“Sure, why not.”

As they made their way out of the restaurant, they spotted Tink in the lobby. He was standing with a woman, and judging from his body language; he didn’t seem pleased with her. His body was tense, and he stood with his arms crossed in front of his chest.

She debated on whether or not she should go over. Just as she decided that she’d give them some space, Tink and the woman turned in her direction. As soon as Alex met the woman’s gaze, Alex felt as if her world had just been rocked. There was no way in hell that her mother was standing across the room from her—the same mother who walked out on her husband and a six-month-old baby.

What the ever-loving fuck was happening?

“Tink?” Alex questioned. Alex had even realized that she had tears in her eyes. But they weren’t happy tears.
