“I say we kill that asshole,” Rebel offered and clapped me on the back. “He doesn’t get to fuck with us and live to tell the tale.”

“As satisfying as it would be to kill him,” Diesel began. “We need to be smart. Do you know where she is right now, Slate?”

I nodded. “The call is still active, so I know exactly where they’re headed. Mark Edwards’ house.” I could only imagine what hell he was going to put her through once he arrived.

“Okay.” Diesel nodded. “The priority is getting Emma and Ash away from the asshole. If he dies in the process, no skin off my back. If he’s alive when we get our hands on the girls, then we should turn him over to Cross. Give him another suspect to pursue.”

It wasn’t exactly what I wanted to hear but it was the smartest play. “Fine.”

“What are we talking about,” Maverick asked, clapping his hands and rubbing them together. “High powered rifles? Handguns? Fire?” His smile was wide and giddy.

“I’d prefer a blade,” I spat out. “So I can peel every inch of skin from his body until he dies from shock. Then I’ll empty my gun into his head.”

The room fell silent and then Rocky laughed. “I like the way you think but we can’t afford that kind of mess, brother. Not in the middle of the day and not with your daughter and your woman inside.”

He was right. Emma and Ash were the priority. I had to get to them first and make sure they were safe and out of harm’s way, because who knew what the fuck Mark would do if he felt cornered.

“Not to be that guy but are we going to involve Cross in this rescue mission?”

“No,” I barked before Diesel could answer. “Kira and Emma both have expressed suspicion that there might be some connection between Massey or someone else and the Edwards brothers. For now we need to get my girls back safely.”

Diesel nodded. “Suit up and let’s go.”

Gio joined us a few minutes later. “What do you need from me?”

“You’re driving the van to bring Emma and Ash back to the clubhouse.”

Gio’s dark eyes lit with excitement. “You got it, bro.”

Fifteen minutes later I was armed to the teeth, angry as fuck and ready to rescue my family. My heart. My everything. The bike roared loudly as it ate up the pavement, my brothers all around me as we flew through the streets of Steel City with just one thought on my mind.

Get my girls back.

End Mark Edwards for good.

Chapter 36

Emma

The minute I came to, I remembered everything that brought me to where I was, which was probably Mark’s house. Or some crack house he knew about from his work as a sleazy PI. My head hurt like a son of a bitch and my wrists were bound too tight with something inflexible that cut into my skin. I kept my eyes closed and tried to listen for any clues about where I might be without letting Mark know I was conscious again.

Ash sniffled in the distance. Mark’s heavy footsteps sounded out from somewhere behind me, slow and steady. The muffled cries from Ash made me think I was in a house, and I prepared myself for the fight of my life. I wasn’t sure what would happen, but it was clear that Mark was no longer thinking like a rational man, he was crazed and out for blood. Specifically, my blood.

“I know you’re awake.” Mark’s voice came from behind me a second before his foot kicked one leg of the chair that held me up. “I heard the minute your breathing changed. No more hiding, bitch.”

I inhaled deeply and let it out slowly before I lifted my head to face forward, because I refused to give him the satisfaction of trying to look at him. “I’m not hiding, merely getting my bearings.”

He snorted. It was his go to sound to let someone—usually me—know just how disgusted he was with me. “There’s nothingto get. You’re at my mercy and you’ll only go free if I decide to let you.”

I ignore the tendril of fear that slid down my chest and wrapped around my spine, weaving its way into the fabric of each vertebra. He was trying to scare me, and it was working, but I had something more important to worry about and it was that thing that fueled me. “Where’s Ash?”

“She’s safe. Your brat is here and unharmed and it’ll stay that way if you give me some fucking answers.”

I let out a bitter laugh and shook my head, still refusing to contort myself to look at him. I didn’t need to. I knew what I would find, pure unadulterated anger. “I should be the one asking you for answers. If anyone knows where Alex is, it’s you.”

“Don’t give me that fucking shit!” He kicked the chair again, this time sending it skidding about three feet across the room. “Just tell me where Alex is, and this will all be over.” His tone was calm, too calm, and more reassuring than he’s ever been.

I knew that tone well. It was the one Alex used to win me back whenever he thought I was serious about leaving him. It was a lie. I would never leave this house, at least not alive. “I don’t know where Alex is, Mark. He threw some plates against the wall, smacked me and then Ash before he stormed off.” I shook my head and let out another laugh. “Things were no different than they’ve always been, except he hasn’t come home.”
