A blast of heat from the wildfire started by those damn Dragons swept over us, the strong breeze carrying embers to the few pieces of grass that hadn’t been churned into mud.

“We also don’t want to get swept up in that,” Vadim said pointedly, following my attention to the multicolored fire battling against a host of Iron Fae. At least Ruslan was failing in that regard too, and had been forced to split his forces to clean up his mess. Pathetic.

“My King, no one would blame you for saving your soldiers from an uncontrollable fire set by the so-called emperor of the continent. He is their savior?” Desmond scoffed. “No, he is their executioner.”

“Their executioner…” I murmured, considering his proposal as I took a broad survey of the battlefield.

If I pulled back due to the fire, I would look like a benevolent king who cared about his people, and appearances were everything. With a sigh, I acquiesced. “Give the order to fall back. We’ll move to Vlisa as quickly as we can and regroup from there.”

My army was nowhere safer from an inferno than beside a lake, after all.

Vadim wasted no time in racing back to the fray, shouting orders as he went. Desmond and I turned our horses toward the healers’ tents, readying for our swift departure. A group of three Night Fae with the ability to use the Mage spells gathered in the center of the camp, linking arms to amplify their power. The words whispered out of them, and they flung their net of magic over us and all the injured, then whisked us deep into the Crystal Realm.

The long, aqua lake greeted us, and the crystal palace that had once been the beating heart of the capital reflected on its glassy surface. I left the healers to their work as I surveyed the haggard groups popping into existence as they retreated from the Day Realm.

The flow of Night Fae slowed to a crawl before finally ceasing altogether. Scanning them, I finally found some of my commanders – Vadim, Viktor, and Kaztar. They dismissed anyone who’d been in their groups, Vadim pulling a few aside and giving them hushed instructions. Once the soldiers seemed to settle in, the three grouped and strode toward me.

“Where is Endre?” I hissed. He wasn’t among the riders leading their horses to the edge of the lake to drink, nor was he among the healers with his father. In fact, there was no sign of his messy hair and terrible attitude.

The three of them shared a look before Viktor opened his mouth to speak.

“He defected.”

Nights during the winter in the Iron Realm were long and dark, and the chill was impossible to chase from the room, even with two roaring hearths. A couple lounged beside one atop a fur rug, with blankets draped over their reclined bodies. Sparks escaped the confines of the stone fireplaces, dancing between them. The female swirled a glass of burgundy wine slowly, her seafoam green eyes trained on the male across from her. Reaching out ever so slowly, he brushed a lock of chocolate hair away from her face, revealing a pointed ear as he tucked it away.

“You can’t fall in love with me,” she told him, taking a sip from her wine to cover the slight shake in her hands.

The male flexed his arms before bracing them on the floor behind him and crossing one leg over the other. “It’s just sex,” he said with a nonchalant air, cocking his head to the side and studying her. His own long locks were tied up away from his face, though a few strands slipped free with the movement.

Setting her glass to the side, the female swept the blanket off her body, then turned to her knees and examined the male in turn. Ever so slowly, she lowered her hands to the floor, scrunching her fingers in the thick fur rug. With a sensual sway to her hips, she crawled to him, climbing over his legs and straddling him.

“Just sex,” she emphasized, tracing a finger along his strong jaw.

He lifted a hand from the floor and twisted it around her long, loose hair. “I can give you what you need, Liliana.” He used his leverage to yank her head back and bare her throat.

“And what’s that, Drazen?” she purred, her tongue flicking out and wetting her lips.

His blue eyes darkened as he studied her fluttering pulse. “Domination.”

The sweet scent of her arousal filled his nose, and he inhaled deeply as he ran it along her neck and up to her ear. She gasped a moan, rolling her hips over his growing hardness.

In one smooth motion, he flipped her on her back, pressing her into the soft rug with the weight of his body. He nipped at the crook of her shoulder, drawing goosebumps to her skin. Her lashes fluttered against her high cheekbones as she arched off the floor.

A hand immediately found her throat and pushed her into the ground, causing her eyes to fly open. They were nearly black with lust, and the male’s nostrils flared at the sight. “You only move when I tell you to. Understood?”

“Yes,” she whispered around his hand.

“Good girl.”

Shifting his weight ever so slightly to allow her some air, he trailed his other hand down her ribcage and found her peaked nipples. She remained still beneath him, waiting to see what he would do next. Her heart thudded with anticipation and excitement, while her thighs grew damp with the promise in his eyes.

The male captured one bud and rolled it between thumb and forefinger. After a sharp tug, he growled, “You’re going to get on your knees and take out my cock. I want to see tears streaming from your face as you gag on it.”

Then, he released her, leaving her bereft of his touch as he rose to tower over her. Without tearing her gaze from him, she did as she was bid, quickly tying back her hair before slipping his loose pants down his hips, allowing his hardness to spring free.

“Oh fuck,” she whimpered at the sight of it.
