“You’re next,” she settled for, nodding.

“You gonna get me back good?” he grinned, covering Troy Abner’s food with another plate.

“I sure will. With supper tonight. You’ll get the royal treatment.”

He made painful hissing noises. “Not theroyal treatment. That’s too much.”

“Too bad,” she laughed. “Can I get up now?”

“You may. And I…am going to steal that couch.”

“No, you’ll take my bed and get some rest. Bout to be morning now. I insist. Please,” she added.

She was back to her default nature of no eye contact. “Tomorrow…well, today,” he said. “I’m taking you and Troy Abner to Jolie Denelle’s for new clothes. Everything you need and everythingyouwant.”

He turned and headed up the stairs when his gift brought on immense astonishment. “Night Momma. I just need about four hours sleep.”

“You need a good eight hours!” she called behind him, making him grin.

“Six. Wake me up in six hours,” he whispered over his shoulder, remembering Troy was asleep.

“Fine,” she whispered back. “Thank you Jeramiah. I loved your breakfast.”

He saluted her at the top of the stairs then went peek in on hislittle man.At seeing his little thumb in his mouth, and arm strangling his stuffed, nappy brown rabbit, his world was officially fuckingcomplete. Mon Dieu merci.

CHATPER TEN

Rukem remembered there were doorbells and rang Darby’s before standing at a reputable distance. Couldn’t believe he’d slept till eleven o’clock. Grim was there to pick up any slack, but he hadn’t talked to his Verthur much since he’d betrayed him with his Marsh Brother. After he talked to Darby about whatever plans she’d made, he would.

The door opened and his fiery fantasy greeted him. He allowed the white pencil skirt and matching jacket with the lavender silk blouse to fill only his peripheral gaze. He recalled picking it and now wanted to scrutinize her in it.

“Good morning,” she said quietly. “Grim’s helping me map out our day.”

The name dispelled the fantasy in progress invoked by her raspy voice. He entered and found his grinning Verthur suited up at the island. “Morning Master Sleepy,” he said stoking the volatile chemicals now leading Rukem over to thebetrayer. Rukem might beevenwith Ace, but this one had dear prices to pay. Maybe he’d help himmapthat one out.

“Well, if it isn’t myfaithfulVerthur,” he muttered.

“Don’t be cranky,” he muttered back. “Webothknew Sophie would be fine.”

“Well that justifies violating codes.”

“So punish me already.”

This wasn’t the first time he’d acted against him in regard to Sophie. Maybe that’s what bothered him more. A repeat offense. “I’m still weighing and measuring,” he assured.

“Good,” Grim said, lifting a cup to his mouth.

His nose picked up the scent of fresh ground coffee.

“I made coffee, would you like some?” Darby asked, bursting his hostile bubble.

“Yes, thank you,” he said, not sure why. He never drank it.

“How do you like yours?”

He realized her soft voice was a vocal lure that begged for engagement. “Black,” he said, devouring her in that outfit the second she turned away.

“Simple. Gotta love that.”
