“I’ll wait.”

“What the fuck are we gonna say?” Ace whispered. “And are you sure I can’t give her what she needs? I mean I’m ready.”

He shook his head as he shot forward, grabbing his arm. “At least let me look at her test results. I’mbegging.”

Ace jerked from his hold, pissed that he’dbeggedhim not to do the thing he was fuckingdesperatefor. As wasshe.Royal piece of shit.

“Oneday,” he whispered.

Ace shot up a single finger. “One,” he swore. “And we’re fucking even.”

“Deal,” Rukem hurried. “Now what happened with Darby?”

God, he wanted to punch him in his nonchalant face. “She agreed to the double date idea. Probably creating a schedule of events that are all brandnewto you.”

He pulled out his phone, raking his disheveled hair from his face. “That should be easy since I have zero social experiences. Still no text. Did she sound upset about me not going?”

Ace searched for a word. “Perturbed.”

“Perturbed? How?”

He shrugged a shoulder. “Sputtering nonsense, saying inappropriate things.”

Rukem’s smile unfurled. “My skittish lamb.” He turned burning eyes on him, appearing curious. “I just realized there isn’t a single thing that I do notloveabout her.” His face sobered as his gaze glazed then snapped on Ace, sharper than ever. “Am I… inlove?”

Ace looked at him, baffled. “How the hell would I know? Don’t you teach classes about it?”

“Brother!”

Ace and Rukem shot up together. “Sister, I came to see for myself that you are well.”

“I amverywell,” she cooed, hugging him. She gasped. “What is this I see when touching you?”

“Uhhhh, not sure,” Rukem said, glancing back at Ace with worried eyes. “You had an episode, it’s probably remnants.”

She shook her head, taking hold of both his hands. “No, surely not.” Another soft gasp as she looked up at him. “Brother, is this a coin of prophecy I’m seeing? Have you seen this?”

Holy shit.

“Sister, please, I didn’t come to talk about me, I’m here to check on you.” He led her to the couch.

“I’m fine, I told you.” She looked over her shoulder at Ace. “I need to help Ace, that’s why he’s here.”

“So soon after your recovery?”

“You know I must,” she whispered. “You know this.”

“Can’t you wait just one day, Sophie? For me? I haven’t even looked at the test results yet. I’m begging.”

She stared at him for many seconds. “Alright,” she coo-fussed. “But not a full day, first thing in the morning?”

“Yes,” he agreed. “Promise you will rest?”

“Of course,” she said, glancing at Ace.

“Might I borrow Ace for a couple of hours?”

“Why?” she hurried. “He’s staying here, with me. I am an adult, you know, as is he. I’m also free to come and go and if I must, I will leave and return to the little hobbit house in the marsh to give Ace my gift.”
