“Let’s just call it even.”

“No, I’m still kicking your ass so I’ll have to pay you some other way.”

Shank chuckled. “Good. Looking forward to cleaning the floor with your pretty face.”

“Call her now. Then text me everything she said. Later. As in we’ll talk later, but text me asap.”

“Got you covered, Romeo.” He hung up and found Darby’s number and moved farther from Sophie’s door.

“Hello?”

“Hey, Darby, it’s Ace.”

“Uh. Yes, it is,” she answered, sounding confused.

“Yeah, Rukem was called in to see Nidev. We just left a big meeting earlier and some new developments came up. He sounded distraught.”

“Nidev did?”

“No, Rukem. About cancelling whatever school projects you two were working on.”

“Oh, right, yes,” she hurried. “Well…I hope everything is okay. Howdidthat meeting go, by the way? Unless it was top secret.”

“Well…I think it was and will let Rukem spill those beans if he’s allowed.”

“Of course,” she sputtered. “So, how are you? It’s been a minute Mr. Hot Pants. As in your pants are in hot water trouble. My grammar is in bed where I should be. But are you okay? I heard Sophie is better. I may have a friend informant with one of the Kings,” she muttered lowly. “But don’t tell Rukem, hehateshim as it is.”

Her nervous rambling had him grinning. “Lips are sealed. And I was a mess, to answer your question.”

“I’m so sorry, Ace,” she said softly. “I know you didn’t mean for anything like that to happen.”

“Moronic lesson learned. How you holding up? Rukem treating you okay?”

“Oh, yes, definitely. Wonderful. Just…learning the ropes and trying to stay out of trouble while…helping him with his uh…school stuff.”

“Yes, so…any closer to leveling our King up?”

She gave a loud snort. “Uh, don’t know, don’t think so?”

“Yeah, he mentioned something about proving something to the Kings.”

“That romance wasn’t required to level up a King, only friendship.”

“Ah,” Ace said. “What do you think?”

“I…who knows, really, I’m just here to help however I can. And teach,” she added, emphatically. “Romance has only ever been a thorn in my side so I don’t have good opinions either way, but hey. I’m here with helping hands.”

“Maybe I can help you and you can help me.”

“Oh?” she bit, curious.

“I want to be with Sophie and you want to help prove this thing about friendship with Rukem. And I don’t want the King to shit on me so what do you think about a double date? We can help Sophie get familiar with the world again?”

“Oh, I think that’s agreatidea! But…what about Rukem?”

“I’ll take care of those details. You take care of the dating details since he and I have zero experience.”

“Well, neither do I!” she cried quietly. “I work all the time, go to school. I don’t have time for dating.”
