“Are we doing this tonight?”

“I hate to do this to you—”

“Don’t,” Shank cut in. “This comes first. And what I have isn’t going anywhere. When you need me?”

“A fucking hour ago. But I can buy you time if you need it.”

Shank closed his eyes. “Sheneeds it.”

He chuckled once. “And you?”

“Oh, I need it,” he vowed. “But it’s not about me, it’s just about her right now.”

“And for me, it’s about you,” Eveque said. “That’s our swamp bond,” he reminded. “You’ll be bringing her?”

“I was, why?” he asked, wondering over his hesitant tone.

“Rukem will make shit, this I am sure.”

“I’m not worried,” Shank said. “This woman is mine and I’m hers. He’s just being protective, and I can’t really piss on that.”

“As much as you’d like to?”

“One hundred,” Shank grinned, hearing Eveque take a deep breath.

“Another brother fallen to the flames. It’s getting uncanny.”

“Surreal,” Shank agreed.

“Yeah?”

“Never once imagined or dreamed what she’s doing to me.”

“Damn. Terrifying?”

Shank’s breath gushed from his lungs. “Last time my body shook like this was when I was about to risk everything for my freedom.”

“Mon Dieu,” Eveque mumbled.

“Except with her, I know I’m safe. The fear is…losing it before I ever taste it.”

“Well go get agooddamn taste, Mon Frere. I’ll hold back the fucking world while you do, oui?”

Shank closed his eyes, his words hitting him harder than ever. “Merci, Eveque.”

“You can pay me back later.”

Shank chuckled. “Sounds like you’ve got a list of debts building.”

“This storm coming tells me there will be plenty of back scratching on both sides. And I don’t know what manner of meeting we’re having but Seer mentioned just the Twelve and the Kings meeting in the glass room of the Syphon King. Something about no ears hearing.”

“No ears hearing?”

“These people have different kinds of connections than we do.”

“Like our Seer,” Shank knew.

“Oui. I’m in the backseat on this one. We all are. But I trust Samuel and he’s in the front seat with them.”
