Her husband's hand reaches out and rubs her back, and it's obvious he doesn't like being near her without touching her. "You waited for the cops?"
"No, I saved her," he says and leans back in the recliner. "Okay, this is going to sound stupid, but I felt this pull towards the bridge. Suffocatingly strong once I reached it, and I didn't have a choice. I had to stop."
"It was the girl," Lex says and leans against Colt's leg. "It's kind of romantic in a mentally unstable way."
"I guess so. Her name is Jolie, and she wanted to die. Just fucking go splat and shit. I tried to talk her off the ledge, but that didn't go well."
Colt laughs. "We're not really great with convincing people to do things outside of the bedroom."
"Did she jump?" Lex asks.
He shakes his head. "Well, yeah, but I caught her just in time. She has a nice little cut on her forehead from where she hit the bridge. And of course, when she was being tended to by professionals, she said I should've let her go."
"Jesus," she says, her eyes wide. "You saved her life."
"For now. I get the feeling this isn't the first or the last time she'll try to end it."
"She's safe for a while, though, right? They have to hold her and shit?" Colt asks.
He nods. "Seventy-two hours."
"Well, it's late," Lex says. "We don't have the guest bed set up, but Colt found an air mattress to sleep on."
"Thanks for letting me stay, guys. I'll figure out something soon. I just... I had to get away from there, you know?"
"You're welcome to stay as long as you need. But... you will need to do some babysitting on occasion," Colt says. "I'm still dating my wife, so we need some time together. And since our parents are back in Griffin's Beach, this actually works out kind of perfectly."
Bodie stares at him. "You're dating your wife?"
"We had some issues," he admits. "Beyond the cheating thing when we were first together. And I'm making up for them. Summerville is very much our fresh start, and rather than just fucking all over the house, I'm taking her on dates to fuck all over other places, too."
"And that's exactly why I fell in love with him," Lex says and fans her face in a mocking manner. "He's just so damn romantic."
"I have a feeling you're not exaggerating about the fucking part."
She laughs. "If you hear things, just ignore them."
"We're conscious of the kids because I'm not ready to explain the birds and the bees to my son yet," Colt says, "but we're what you'd callactive."
"We're done for the night, though," Lex says. "Chicago kind of interrupted us."
"Yeah, that's what you think," he says, lifting her up and tossing her over his shoulder. "Goodnight. Bathroom is just to the right of your room, which is right there, and the kitchen is barely stocked yet. But you're welcome to whatever you can find."
Bodie watches Colt carry his wife down the opposite hallway, and he misses having someone to play around with like this. Someone who is not only his lover but his best friend. The fact Colt admitted to the problems they had, whether vague or not, tells Bodie he's a decent man. And she's one hell of a woman for giving him the opportunity to make up for whatever happened between them.
Sighing, he walks into the room and lies down on the air mattress. This is his new temporary home, and he prays it helps settle his mind and his heart. Mostly his heart.
Chapter Two
Summerville
Lex
Abenefit of having a heartbroken biker at home is the fact Lex and Colt can come to the clubhouse after the kids go to sleep while Bodie stays home. It hit Lex today how difficult of a transition it's going to be now that neither of their parents are just right around the corner.
"Lex!" shouts a vivacious brunette with big, curly hair and a chest bigger than Melanie's as she jumps up and down.
She looks like the perfect mix of Goldie, an original old lady, and Jace’s old lady, Melanie, from Griffin's Beach. Her hair could be a brunette version of Goldie’s eighties perm while her chest is as out and proud as Mel’s is. It makes her a little homesick.
