“But I was so lost in the hope of who I could be that I dragged you along.” He smiled a sad sort of smile. “And now I just want to be your friend. Authentically. Without strings or misconceptions.” He paused. “If you’ll have me.”

Nikki closed her eyes and took stock of her emotions. There was still some confusion mingling with the relief of having said what she needed to say. Could they be friends? Maybe.

“It’s so unconventional it might just work,” she said, opening her eyes.

His lips tugged up on one side.

“You know I have a weakness for punk rocking the shit out of things,” she said.

His smile grew a little more hopeful.

“I’m still kind of angry with you,” she said.

“I’m still angry with me too,” he agreed.

Part of her felt enormous relief at having been able to tell him how she felt. Or had felt. And another, softer part of her was just sad.

Final.

And no matter what you’ve been told, even happy endings carry their own bit of sorrow in them.

He took a step closer to her, bringing them within inches. His gaze danced over her face and her hair and settled on her eyes. A peaceful determination in his jaw. His voice dropped to a rough whisper. “I will never again not be there for you.”

Despite her better judgement or what others may have done in the same situation, Nikki let her heart respond for her.

She slid her arms around his waist and hugged him. She put her head on his chest and closed her eyes. After a beat, his arms came around her and held her tight, wrapping her in warmth.

She inhaled the scent of his soap and aftershave, and it was the same as it had been two and a half years ago.

They stood there, holding one another, letting the moment fade into them.

He ran a hand up her spine and back down. Again. Again. Slow, soft, comforting.

She finally had her answers, and he was there to soothe the pain of it all.

It was more sweet than bitter, and she hoped it was a glimpse into where they were headed. Maybe now they could both find the peace and love they deserved.

Wherever that might be.

She’d stopped by her office that morning and was surprised by the amount of work he and Javier had already done. When had he started?

Last night he’d walked her home, hugged her, and said goodnight.
