“What is on your face?” he asked, shaking his head.

She tugged on her beard and grinned.

“She looks cute, right?” Dave, her rock star husband, said coming up beside her. And by rock star, André meant that literally.

Dave, aka Sunshine Capone, was dressed similarly to Sabine except his beard was gray.

“What am I looking at here?” André asked, pointing between the two of them.

“I’m young Obi-Wan and he’s old Obi-Wan,” Sabine explained. “But I was not expecting to see you here.” She flicked her eyes to Nikki, trying to be inconspicuous, but André knew what she was asking.

“Are you sure it’s okay for him to be here?” André asked, meaning Dave. Because rock star in public just seemed irresponsible.

Nikki bumped his shoulder. “These people do not care. Allison is here and no one bats an eye. And she’s local-scene royalty.”

Dave was nodding. “It’s true. Besides, I have a bodyguard around here somewhere…” He looked around the lobby. “She’s stealthy like a ninja.”

Sabine nodded in agreement.

It didn’t make sense to André, but he wasn’t about to argue. He glanced at the people surrounding them and it did seem that no one cared. About half of the moviegoers were dressed in a costume of some kind. Perfectly content looking very out of place in the middle of the night in downtown Chicago.

He turned to say something to Nikki, but she was gone. He spotted her at the counter, buying her own candy, and disappointment twisted his gut.

Disappointment in himself.

“Brother mine,” Sabine said regaining his attention. “Is this a date?”

“I wish,” he said without thinking. He blew out a breath as he thought about how to answer the questions his sister had asked. They were valid questions.

He just didn’t have the answers.

This was a bad idea. He shouldn’t even be here.

Nikki was here with her friends, and he was being intrusive.

Again.

“Actually, I think I’m just going to—”

“I got extra butter on the popcorn,” Nikki said, shoving the bag into his hands. “So, you’ll have to deal. But I have a ton of napkins.” She shimmied her chest at him, where at least a half a bundle of paper napkins was poking out of the collar of her shirt.

He choked on his surprised laugh.

Her pleased smile warmed him and soothed his previous anxiety.

“Also, so much candy.” She held out her hands to reveal at least six packages of different candy.

“That’s so much sugar,” André said.

She nodded and turned to the doors of the theater. “C’mon. I like to sit in the middle.”

André’s eyes connected with his sister’s for a moment. Sabine looked confused but happy.

So, the same as André, then.

He followed Nikki into the darkened theater and shuffled past cosplayers and other people who all seemed to know her name.

As soon as he sat down beside her, his sister sat next to him, and Asa sat on the other side of Nikki.
