But he listened when she called to vent about things even though he would have no way of knowing what they were. Or when Asa was being weird. Or how Johnny said she was gifted and that had made her cry.

Sometimes she’d send him a naked picture to show her appreciation.

He was busy prepping for the school year. The weekdays were packed with responsibilities for both of them. But they managed to have a lot of sex.

Like, alotof sex.

Nearly every single night she was texting him from outside his apartment. Sometimes at two in the morning.

She’d send the text and decide to wait five minutes before going home. If he was asleep, she didn’t want to wake him.

She never waited longer than a minute before his reply.

And one time he stopped by the studio during lunch. Let’s just say she was glad he had installed locks on her office door.

On Sunday, their scheduled day off, they had planned on doing “couple-y things.” Like go dancing and try a new restaurant. Have a real date.

But Nikki was out of clean clothes.

“I have to do laundry,” she said over the phone. Disappointment rolled through her. “I am legitimately out of clean anything. I am currently wearing polar bear pajama bottoms and a swimsuit top. They don’t match.”

André chuckled.

God, she loved that sound.

Ugh. She missed him.

“Bring your clothes over here. I have a full-size washer and dryer right in my apartment,” André offered.

“You do?” She stopped picking up her clothes and stared at the wall in her room. He couldn’t possibly be serious. Laundry wasn’t a sexy date night activity.

“Yes. Bring your clothes over. I’ll make us some food and we can watch a movie or something.”

So simple.

“You’re sure?” she asked, eyeing the basket of laundry she’d almost filled.

“Absolutely. I miss you. And doing laundry and talking about our week sounds like bliss to me. Hashtag goals.”

A laugh bubbled out of her. “Did you just sayhashtag goals?”

“Yes. What? Did I not use that correctly?” he asked.

“You’re amazing.” She laughed again. “I’ll be there in a few minutes.”

And that was how she found herself standing in André’s apartment loading the washing machine while he cooked food for them.

She paused and let her eyes wander over her surroundings.

While they’d been spending a lot of time at his place, she hadn’t really paid any attention to it. They were always busy with other things.

It wasn’t extravagant but it was a spacious, open-concept loft. Clean, decorated with books and replica artifacts. A subtle masculine color scheme throughout in rich browns and cream and forest green.

She stopped when she felt his eyes on her.

“Can I ask you a weird question?” She closed the washer and selected a cycle.

“I’d be disappointed if you didn’t.” He crossed his arms and leaned a hip against the kitchen counter, watching her.
