“Why did you call?” she asked, watching him. Calm, curious, warm.

He tightened his arms around her a bit, feeling her nearness, letting it reassure him.

“To say sorry. To tell you I missed you.” He inhaled, the old ache of missing her no longer present in his chest.

How about that?

It wasn’t there. It had been there yesterday.

And today it was gone.

“You missed me?” she asked.

Her soft tone had him seeking her eyes.

“Yeah, I missed you. Every day. No matter where I was or what I was doing, the ache of missing you was always there.”

He slid a finger under her chin and tipped her lips up towards him. He kissed her lightly and the return pressure from her lips sealed something in his soul. Something he hadn’t known needed sealing.

This was it. This was the first day of their new beginning.

No second-guessing, no more running away.

“You need to know something,” he said, holding her close. “I’m done running away. I’m going to show up for you every time. No matter what. Every single time I’ll be there. I’m going to be the one you count on forever.”

She stared into his eyes, then curved one of her hands around his neck and pressed her mouth to his. Her tongue slid inside, and he groaned at the wet heat. His arms tightened around her, and he deepened the kiss.

He pulled away long enough to take the coffee cup from her and set it on the table next to them. When he came back to her, she was shifting in his lap to straddle him. She draped her arms around his neck and shoulders and then she kissed the hell out of him.

Long, slow strokes of her tongue into his mouth. One of his hands curved around her hip and then over her ass while the other ran up her spine to cup the back of her head. The taste of her, the heat of her mouth, the feel of her soft body pressing into his, had him ready to go.

The honk of a horn startled them both and they stopped kissing and eyed each other. The horn had sounded like the kind clowns use and it was just odd enough to give them pause.

The horn sounded again a bit closer followed by Nikki’s dad calling from up the path.

“Get yourselves decent and come up to the house. Breakfast in fifteen.”

Nikki closed her eyes and her forehead dropped to André’s chest.

“Oh my God,” she groaned. “Did my dad just catch us making out?”

André’s laugh grew until they were both shaking. It cooled his arousal immediately, but it was too funny to be upset about it.

“Did your dad just stop us from making out with a clown horn?”

Nikki’s cry of embarrassment had him straight guffawing.

She scooted off his lap and stood. “Sure, you laugh, but if it wasyourdad, it wouldn’t be as funny.”

André shrugged and also stood. He followed her back into the cabin.

“No, your dad embarrasses you because he loves you. Mine does it because he’s just an embarrassment.” André pulled work pants and a fresh tee out of his bag along with his suspenders.

“You don’t talk about your dad much,” Nikki pointed out casually. She laid clothes out on the bed too.

“There’s not much to say. He’s a prick.”

Nikki grimaced and he went to her, pulling her into a hug. She wrapped her arms around his middle and sank into his embrace.
