What did she just say?

Did she just say what it sounded like she’d said?

They were doing this? Nikki was producing an album for her?

She stared at the phone in her hand as she tried to process what just happened.

When she looked up, Justin was gone but André was still there.

She was really glad that André was still there.

“Has something happened?” he asked carefully.

Their previous moment had passed with this new development. He must’ve read it on her face, because his expression had sobered.

He crossed the room to her, curiosity lining his brow.

“Yeah,” Nikki said, sounding as shocked as she felt. “Zara Lorna wants to schedule studio time with me to make an album.”

The words hung in the air a moment as they became real.

André scooped her into a hug and swung her around the room.

She was laughing when he set her down.

“That’s the dream, right?” he asked.

“Yep.” She nodded and her eyes began to burn. “That’s the dream,” she repeated on a hiccup.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, eyes searching hers with affection.

She shook her head and tears spilled out.

“I think I’m just tired,” she said after a minute. “It was a long weekend.”

Because how could she tell him that even though she was getting everything she ever wanted, she was more terrified than she’d ever been in her life?

It wouldn’t make any sense.

But the tears wouldn’t stop, and she tried to laugh even as they poured out of her.

“I feel so stupid,” she said, taking the tissue he handed her. “I’m happy.” She waved her hands in front of her. “I shouldn’t be crying.”

“Hey.” He cupped her cheek with his hand and looked tenderly in her eyes. “Crying is part of the experience. You’re not stupid.”

She nodded and more tears spilled out.

“I do think you’re exhausted though.” He pulled her into a tender embrace, and she rested her cheek on his chest. “I think—and this is just my opinion—but I think you should go home and rest.”

She nodded against him.

He was right.

She hadn’t slept more than a few hours in the last couple of days. All of this would look more manageable after she’d gotten some sleep.

“I’ll walk you home.”
