“Whatever. Tonight, when I find him, I’m going to take him straight to bed and prove to you that he’s the best lover there ever was.”

Kinsey narrowed her eyes, only to retort, “Well, I really hope you do. I hope you bang him harder than he’s ever been banged before.”

When I realized we were facing off as if to have an epic smackdown, I sputtered out a laugh and leaned forward to rest my brow on hers. “Oh my God, I can’t,” I cried with tears of mirth trailing down my cheeks.

“What’re you talking about?” Kinsey giggled back. “I’m loving this.”

“You would.”

“Damn, I’ve missed you, Pookie,” she announced, beginning to sway with me. “Nothing’s been the same at home without you. This whole week has just been…nice.”

“Yeah,” I agreed with a sigh. “I should drop out of school and come home, huh?”

“No,” she mumbled sadly. “Don’t you even dare. You gotta stay here because this is what’s best for you, and I want you to get the very best. I just wanted you to know you were special enough to be missed.”

“Aww, I miss you guys, too,” I admitted.

We stayed that way a moment longer before I added, “Do you think he’s even going to be there? Sometimes it feels as if I’m never even going tomeetthis guy. And what if he’s really a conceited prick after all?”

“Well, we’ve come this far. Might as well find out for ourselves.”

I nodded. “Yeah. Okay. Hey?—”

Before I could say anything else, though, the driver cursed from the front seat and slammed on the brakes.

Kinsey and I lifted our faces in surprise just as the car went into a sideways skid. We screamed in unison when light blinded us from the headlights of another car approaching too fast.

From there, everything went blank.

THE BEACH

Icame to, lying on my back. I was outside. It was dark—nighttime—and I could tell I was on a beach. I felt sand under my fingers and heard the crash of waves nearby.

Sitting up, I glanced around, not sure what I was doing here, how I’d gotten here, or even whereherewas.

I’m not even sure if I could answerwhoI was.

I just knew I was alone on a beach in some residential area. There were cottages not far behind me, and a fathomless dark sea stretched in front of me.

Hoping maybe I could find some sign of life in one of the cottages, I pushed my way to my feet.

When sand squished between my toes, I glanced down, wondering why I was barefoot.

This didn’t seem right. I couldn’t remember what I’d just been doing, but I was pretty sure I hadn’t been on a beach.

Or barefoot.

A night-light shone from a bungalow a couple of houses down, so I started that way, only to glance out toward the water yet again. It was dark and loud and gave me no answers until I spotted a small figure out by the edge of the waves.

“Hey,” I called. “Hey!”

Another human.

Maybe they could help me. But as I jogged closer, I realized the boy who whirled around to gape at me in shock was just a child, only six or seven or eight years old. He had a head full of beautiful blond hair that reflected off the moonlight, making it look almost like a glowing golden-white halo, and he wasn’t wearing a shirt, just swimming trunks, and his feet were as bare as mine.

“Where did you come from?” he asked with some surprise. “You’re not supposed to be here.”
