Luca stepped out of Calvin’s building, a deep sigh escaping his lips. He hadn’t wanted things to escalate to this point, but the satisfaction of witnessing Archer’s downfall outweighed any reservations he had. If Delilah had to be collateral damage in the process, then so be it. The thrill of seeing Archer brought low was worth any price.

He got into his car and headed to an apartment complex not too far from the building. Upon entering one of the flats, he saw Stephan sitting at the kitchen bar, emotionless.

Luca patted his back. “Go get ready. We’re going out for a bit.”

Stephan shook his head, and Luca sighed.Hopefully this doesn’t take too long. “Let’s go. We need to do a few things—”

“Like what!” Stephan snarled, his voice tinged with bitterness. “There’s no point anymore in all of this.”

“You need to pull yourself together,” Luca said firmly. “If we’re going to stop your father’s plans, I need you to look like you actually give a damn and that you’re not just wallowing in fucking misery…”

Stephan’s eyes flickered with a mix of anger and resignation. “And what if I don’t care, huh? What if I don’t give a damn?”

“You will in a minute,” Luca muttered dismissively, taking a seat on the stool beside him as Stephan furrowed his eyebrows.

As if on cue, the phone and Luca smiled as he picked it up. “Well, hello, Michael. It took you long enough to respond.”

Stephans’s eyes widened as Michael replied,“You said you had some information in regards to my family that you think I should know about.”

Luca chuckled. “We’ll get to that in a little while, but before we do that… we need to get you to New York.”

“Why?”

Luca chuckled internally, and Stephan didn’t miss the evil glint that passed in his eyes. “Because... I think it’s time Delilah met Father Dearest. Wouldn’t you agree?”

Chapter forty-one

Omniscient

Calvin watched as Brielle and Killian drove off, and he entered the building furiously. He went over to where they were sitting to see Eugene avoiding all eye contact. No one had left the room yet, but the tension in the air was thick. Vivienne looked up at him in question, and he sighed.

“This night has been a total catastrophe, and not in the way that I had planned it to be,” he muttered. “We’ll be heading out now. Going to stop at the office for a bit. Enjoy the rest of your evening ladies, Porter, Masahiko…Newman.”

Leaving with Andrew and Vivienne, he dropped his wife off at home and drove over to his building. Once inside, he opened the door to his office to see Eugene already inside, waiting.

“What the hell were you thinking?” Calvin muttered as he poured a glass of scotch.

Eugene didn’t say anything as he watched him sit down tensely, cracking his neck to the side.

“You’re getting out of control, Eugene,” Calvin warned.

Eugene glared. “What do you mean, out of control? I can’t even express my opinions anymore around you—” he began, but stopped when Calvin chuckled as he sat back.

“Of course you can’t! This was a time to figure out what Porter and Masahiko wanted from me, to know if Killian knew about it—but guess what? You ruined the entire fucking night with your inability to just shut the fuck up. What were you trying to accomplish!?” Calvin seethed. Eugene only averted his gaze as the man continued, “You think making your baby sister cry is going to help this situation you’re in now? Trying to push her away, so you don’t feel guilty about helping me? Yeah, let me know when that works out for you.” He laughed, and it was silent for a moment.

“Calvin... I want out,” Eugene said.

Calvin’s smile dropped. The atmosphere switched as Calvin slammed the glass onto the table and stood up.

“What the hell did you just say to me?” he asked.

Eugene held eye contact as he repeated his words. “I want out… I can’t do this anymore.” He almost pleaded.

Calvin crossed his arms. He shook his head, faking concern. “Eugene, that kind of attitude simply won’t do. I left you alone many years ago. You knew I would call you when I needed you back, and I only called you so you can clean up the fucking mess you call Marissa and your parents. Had you followed instructions, they would not be alive, and we wouldn’t be where we are now.”

He approached Eugene slowly, who still stood his ground.

“Let’s not forget, Eugene.Ilet you start a family.Ilet you get away from me and from all of the secrets.Ilet you get away from your past. I could take it all away if I wanted to. You need to hold up your end of the bargain, Eugene. You’re a murderer. You can do things that I simply cannot let go of yet. The only difference between you and someone in prison is thatyou haven’t been convicted. And yet… that could change quickly if your loyalty to me becomes a question again.”
