“No, actually, my parents wanted to make a statement. My little brother’s name is Valor.”

“I like it. Well, Liberty, you’re early. Are you always this early for appointments? We rarely do anything before ten. I don’t know how this could’ve happened?”

“I think there was a mix-up in times.” I had no intention of telling him the truth, at least not yet. My appointment had been set up for noon, but that was way too late in the day.

“Either way, if you did get the job, you’d be starting your day this early anyway. Would that be a problem?”

“Not at all. I usually wake up around six.”

That was total bullshit, especially since I’d been hanging out at Dirty Coyote. They didn’t close until two in the morning, and by the time my head finally hit the pillow, it was already three a.m. No way did I even open my eyes until ten or eleven every morning, but I knew damn well that once the sun came up, a child didn’t last long in bed. Particularly younger kids. No matter what time they fell asleep, they seemed to always open their eyes whenever full daylight hit.

“I hope you know this job requires that you live onsite. I’m assuming the agency filled you in on some of these things.”

I’d had no idea. “When you say, live onsite, what does that mean exactly?”

I hadn’t even considered living on the premises. I just assumed I’d drive in every morning. This job was getting more and more complicated, but I was here now and determined to do whatever it took. Although, the prospect of taking up residency on this estate seemed like a much better idea than my motel.

“It’s not like you have to live in the house with us. Nothing like that. There’s a small guest house out back, completely furnished, but it’s not cleaned out yet from our last nanny. She… um… left in a hurry, and we haven’t had— The guesthouse should be ready in a day or two. It’s a one bedroom, with ample living space, a couple of TVs, and internet. That’s all part of the employment package. Also, we can only give you one full day off a week, Monday, and half of Sunday. The kids usually wake up around seven and are in bed by eight every night. Not that they always fall asleep right away, but once they do, nothing seems to wake them.

“Except for when we’re playing at Dirty Coyote, your nights are yours. And most times, when we perform, Austin’s parents will come by and stay with the kids. Even when one or two of us is out, one of us is always around every night, so you don’t have to worry about that. But during the day, you’re pretty much on call. If you’re worried about compensation, we’re very generous, which you probably already know from the agency.”

“They told me very little about compensation.”

That part didn’t interest me, and I never asked about it. One of the women at the agency tried to give me the compensation rundown, but unfortunately, I hadn’t paid attention.

Now I wish I had.

“We have a base salary of seventy-five thousand per year, before bonuses and perks, but because you’re only here for these next two weeks, well, the agency will pay you accordingly. This is way too complicated for me this early in the morning. I’m sorry.”

That was more than I’d ever been paid for babysitting in my entire life. “That sounds doable,” I told him, trying to sound as if I knew something about base salary for a nanny.

“Do you have any medical experience?”

“I studied to be a veterinarian in college. Does that count?”

He chuckled. “In this family, that counts, big time.”

Boone had a deeper voice than Austin, and eyes that were so dark brown, they tempted pure black, which was the color of his hair. His son had black hair as well, with baby blues. A lethal mix if ever there was one.

Boone sported some light facial hair, not as much as Austin, but enough to keep me interested.

“It should be fine,” I told him, thinking of how anything would be better than living in a motel, and the compensation was a bonus, as far as I was concerned.

“I’m not saying you have the job, but in case we all agree…”

“All?” I asked, wondering who else that would entail. “As in the other members of the band?”

“Kasey and Austin and of course, the kids have a say in this process as well.”

My heart skipped a beat. “I’d initially thought there was only one. Austin’s child, but now I can see that you have a child as well. Is that it?”

“No, but if you take the job… that is if we offer it, and you take it, you’d have to sign a non-disclosure agreement,” Boone said. “All three of us have a child, all under the age of five, but we don’t want them in the public eye. We keep that fact close to home. Not that our fans won’t learn the truth, eventually. That’s unavoidable, but we want the kids to stay out of the spotlight for as long as possible.”

I knew I could handle one child and decided I could probably handle two, but more than that was something else entirely, especially if they were all as spirited as Hank. I could tell Hank would be a handful, but to triple that fun, well, no wonder they couldn’t hold onto a nanny. Were the kids all screamers?

Oh my God, what am I getting myself into!

No chance I could sign the band and leave. I’d have to see this through, now.
