I wanted to know what she intended to tell her date.

For some reason, it suddenly occurred to me that we could be waiting for dates from that same app she’d told me about. Of course, no way would I admit that I’d gone on there when I told her I didn’t believe in dating apps.

Nope… no lies here.

“That we don’t feel well and had to go home.”

“But isn’t that a lie?” I asked, tossing her rule back.

She turned and gazed at me. “Yes… okay, how about, we’re having too much fun with an old friend we met at the bar, and we’re sorry, but we have to cancel.”

“It’s Christmas Eve. We shouldn’t, I mean… I don’t know.”

“Then, what should we say?” she asked, still gazing up at me. Damn, but I wanted to kiss her. “You come up with it.”

Our drinks arrived, and I reached in for mine, a single malt scotch, knocked back half of it, then gave her my thoughts on the subject.

“That we’re waiting for them at the bar,” I told her, desperately wanting her to rebuke the statement.

“It’s the right thing to do,” she said, sipping on her second glass of wine.

“Absolutely the right thing,” I told her, as someone tried to get around behind me, causing me to move in closer to her… real close… so close it wouldn’t take much for me to lean over and kiss her, but I didn’t.

“After all, they drove all the way here, on Christmas Eve, probably leaving their family to be with us.”

I could feel the heat building between us as I continued to stand only mere inches away from her, and the folks behind me lingered while trying to pass.

“You mean like what I did with my family?” I said, trying like hell to control all my fucking desires that were raging through me.

“Ah-huh,” she mumbled.

I came close to giving in and just kissing her, when the folks behind me finally moved, giving me more room.

I took a step back and broke the trance.

“Okay, I’m going to text her right now and tell her I’m sitting at the bar,” I said, regretting the words as they tumbled from my mouth.

“Me too. This has been nice, though.”

“Really nice. Maybe we can do it again sometime?”

I took the risk and left the door open for an actual date. Not that I thought she would go for it when the guy she was meeting was probably some dude who owned his own company and looked like a cover model.

“I’d like that,” she said, making my night or possibly my life.

Still, I wondered if she was simply being polite, or if she was genuine. Either way, I wasn’t in the mood to meet my date.

Not now, not when I had a positive response from Dani.

I hated being in this position. I didn’t want to be rude to Shannon, but I didn’t want to miss my opportunity with Dani, either. If I were the type of guy who believed in the power of the universe, I wouldn’t be stressing either way. The right thing would happen, despite my wanting to force my hand.

But I didn’t believe in any of that stuff. I believed opportunities happened for you, and unless you grabbed hold when they came your way, they’d go to the next guy… and in this case, it was Dani’s date.

We pulled out our phones, and I wanted to walk outside to send my lying text because Dani was fogging my thoughts. She’d convinced me to tell the truth, and I would do just that… maybe.

I started texting Shannon how I ended up at the wrong restaurant, and I was now at the correct restaurant, sitting at the bar, but then changed my mind when I gazed over at Dani who busied herself with sending her truthful message.

I deleted mine and instead, I wrote:
