“It's not really fire related. But I guess we should do what the cute fireman told us to do.” He stood and held out his hand to her. She took it and smiled at him.

“Are we going to regret this in the morning?”

He picked up the bottle of tequila. “Probably.”

Jade swam into consciousness as she tried to remember just where she was. Her head hurt. And her stomach was all squirrely. She took a deep breath, then opened her eyes. She recognized the ceiling above her by the small water stain in the shape of a bunny. Sawyer swore it looked more like a mouse. But the ears were way to long for a mouse. It did have a long tail, though. Her head hurt too much for her to think about it right now.

She rolled over, then sat up with a start, which made her head hurt even more. She put her hand to her forehead, then took in the prone and naked figure of Sawyer lying next to her. He was lying on his stomach—thank God for small favors—and was asleep.

Jade tried not to panic, but she had no recollection of how they ended up in bed together. She tried to think about what she did remember.Beer, Fritos, tequila, Skittles, and more beer. Kissing? Was there kissing? She closed her eyes and shook her head. There was kissing. But not the kind that leadsto this. Sawyer had more to drink than she did. If she didn’t remember what happened after they got back to the apartment. He probably didn’t either. She just had to get out of bed without waking him up.

She watched him for a moment. He seemed pretty out of it still. She took a look at his body.Oh my God. He really is Hercules. She was naked, as well, and their clothes were strewn across the floor. What if he woke up when she was standing there with nothing on? He’d surely figure out what went down last night. Aside from the whole embarrassing aspect of that situation.

She sat up slowly, keeping an eye on Sawyer’s face. So far, so good. She reached down and grabbed a blanket that had fallen to the floor. As she was bringing it back up to wrap around herself, Sawyer put a hand on her arm and opened his eyes.

She gasped and covered herself with the blanket.

He looked at her for a minute. “Why are you in my bed? Or why am I in your bed?” He started to roll over, and she put a hand over her eyes.

“No. Stop. You’re not dressed.”

He looked down at himself, then looked at her. “Neither are you.” Suddenly, realization registered in his eyes. “Oh shit.”

“Yeah. I believe that is an appropriate response.” She reached for the sheet at the foot of the bed. “I’m just going to cover your ass if that’s okay.” She put the sheet over him. “There. That’s better.”

He rolled onto his side and rested on his elbow. After rubbing his forehead for a moment, he said, “I’m assuming we…you know. But I gotta tell you, I have no recollection of how we got here.”

“Oh, thank God.” She shook her head. “I don’t either. This is bad, right?”

“The fact that we’re here? Or the fact we can’t remember?”

“Both I guess.”

“Hmm. I don’t even remember getting back to the apartment.”

“The two firemen. Joe and…I can’t remember the other one’s name. But he was cute. I remember that.”

Sawyer pointed at her. “Furniture. I remember something about furniture.”

Jade tucked the blanket around her a little tighter. “What are we going to do about this, Sawyer? We…slept together.”

“Maybe we just slept?”

She cocked her head. “Really?”

“No. I don’t think so. But you know what? It’s fine. We don’t remember it. So it’s like it never happened.”

“Hmm. I’m not sure it works that way.”

“It works however we want it to work. It’s just between you and me, right?”

“I imagine Joe and the cute fireman…” She rubbed her head. “Damn, what was his name?” She sighed. “Anyway. They probably knew where things were heading.”

Sawyer scowled. “They don’t count, Jade. They’re not following us to Castle Springs.”

“Right. Okay. It never happened. Is that what we’re going with?”

“Yes.” She offered him her hand, and he shook it. “Back to being friends?”
