Sawyer took a sip of coffee, then opened the jerky and offered Jade a piece.

“No thanks.”

“You used to love jerky.”

She looked at it for a moment, then took it from him. When she took a bite, she nodded. “Okay. Yeah. I forgot I liked jerky.”

He grinned. “Jerky, fries from Mr. Kluck’s, and a beer you took from your dad’s stash. Where were we?”

“In the loft during a hail storm. Best day ever.”

“It was. Although it sounded like the roof was going to fall in.”

“I think I brought two cigarettes that day, too.”

“Yeah. Gross. I hope you don’t still smoke.”

“I don’t. I quit about five years ago.”

“Good.”

“You never smoked?”

“Nope. The thought of inhaling something into my lungs was never appealing to me.”

“Does that go for other inhaled substances?”

“Yeah. Do you smoke weed?”

“I did for a while. Not anymore.” She smiled at him. “You’re still a good kid, Sawyer.”

“It’s more a matter of priorities. I’ve been training for the last six years. Cigarettes, drugs, and alcohol don’t really work with that. I haven’t given up beer, though. And I’ll drink harder stuff with J.T. once in a while.”

“And for medicinal purposes.”

“Yes. That too.”

As soon as he finished eating and his coffee was gone, Sawyer started getting sleepy again. “Alright. I give up. I need to close my eyes for a little while.”

“Please do.”

“I shouldn’t sleep that long. But just in case, the restaurant is called Big Ted’s, and it’s in a town called Wimbly. If you blink, you’ll miss it. Just start looking when you get within eighty miles of Billings.”

“Big Ted’s?”

“Yes. It’s a deli, and they make the best sandwiches in Montana.”

“Sounds good. I’ll get us there.” She took her phone out of her pocket. “I’ll listen to some music.”

“Let me see your playlist.” She handed him the phone, and he pulled it up. “Wow. I’m glad to see your inner rock star is still there.”

She took the phone from him and put one earbud into her ear. “Not even Seth could quash that.” She pushed play on a song and started bobbing her head.

“Rock on, Skittles.” He folded his coat up and put it between the window and his head, then he closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.

The change in speed and feeling the car turn, woke Sawyer and he opened his eyes and sat up straight. “Is everything okay?”

“Yes. Are you ready for a Big Ted sandwich?”
