Jade picked up the bottle of pills and read the label. “The dosage is one every four hours.”

“Just give me the damn pills, Jade. I know what I’m doing.”

She dropped three pills into her hand and held them out to him. He swallowed them with the water, then handed the glass to her. “One more shot.”

“This is going to knock you out.”

“That’s what I’m going for.” She poured him a shot, and he drank it, then laid down on the couch with a whispered curse. He put his head on the pillow. “Thank you.”

She wrapped the large bag of ice in a towel, then set it gently on his side. “It looks like a horse kicked you.”

“Kind of feels like that, too.”

She handed the smaller bag of ice wrapped in a washcloth and he put it over his eye. “I’m going to fade out here soon. Will you remove the ice in thirty or forty minutes?”

“Of course. What else can I do?”

He closed his eyes for a moment, then opened them again. “Nothing. I’m glad you’re here. Thank you.”

“I thought you didn’t get beat up.”

“This is an exception. The guy was tough. But believe it or not, he looks worse.”

“Did you win?”

Sawyer gave her another painful smile. “Yeah. Still undefeated.” He closed his eyes again. But a few moments later he opened them. “Shit. Sage.”

“Do you need to call her?”

“Yeah. My damn phone is in the locker. She’s probably going crazy. Do you have a phone?”

“Yes.” She went to get her phone from the kitchen counter, then handed it to him.

He stared at it for a moment. “I can’t see the numbers.”

She took it back. “What’s her number?”

He took a moment to remember. “406…768…” He sighed. “Um…23…79.”

“4067682379?”

“Yeah.”

Jade dialed the number, and it was answered right away.

“Hello?”

She glanced at Sawyer. “Sage?”

“Yes. Who is this? Is my brother okay?”

“He’s fine. Or…”

“How bad is he? Is this the hospital?”

Jade shook her head. “No. He’s at home.”

“Who is this?”
