“Bathroom.”

“It’s cold in here.”

“I’ll start a fire.”

She took the box back from him, then went to the kitchen area and poured herself some coffee.

Jade came out of the bathroom, looking totally put together. “That was fast. What did you bring?”

“The usual.”

“A lemon Danish?” Jade went to the box and opened it. “Thank you. I’m starving.”

Sage studied them both. “What’s going on, guys?”

Sawyer shrugged. “Nothing. What do you mean?”

“You’re both being weird.”

Jade took her pastry and one of the cups of coffee Sawyer poured and went to the couch. “We’re just ready to unload some boxes.”

Sage shook her head. “I’m sure that’s it. Whatever, guys.” She picked up one of the blueberry muffins and went to the chair.

Sawyer busied himself with the woodstove for a few minutes, then topped off his coffee and took a bear claw from the box. “Thanks, sis. You’re spoiling me.”

“Don’t get used to it.”

Sawyer sat next to Jade. There was no way Sage wasn’t going to pick up on what was going on between him and Jade sooner or later. Their connection might get in the way of Jade wanting to keep it a secret.

He finished the first bear claw, then got up to get the second one. He looked at Jade. “More coffee?”

“Yes, please.”

“Do you want your muffin, too?” She nodded, and he looked at Sage. “How about you? More coffee? A second muffin?”

Sage frowned at him. “Why are you being so nice to me?”

“I’m always nice to you. Or I’m nice to you most of the time.”

She sighed. “I’ll take both, please.”

When they were all full of pastries and coffee, they went downstairs to the trailer and began unloading it. Sage seemed surprised at how little stuff he’d brought back with him.

“This is all you brought back?”

“Yeah. It’s not like I collected a bunch of crap while I was there. I wasn’t in Missoula to make a home for myself.”

“I know. But still. I guess you didn’t need my help after all.”

“Maybe not. But I’m glad you’re here.”

“Aww. You do love me.”

“Let’s not go that far.”
