“That would be really weird. And certainly not something I’d want to know about my sister.”

“I’m sure she feels the same way. Hopefully, she felt you were safe and loved last night.”

“Loved?”

They’d reached the truck, and she stopped and looked at him. “You know what I mean. I’ve always loved you, Sawyer.”

“Right.”

She put her arms around him and kissed him. “I don’t want this to get complicated.”

“I know. I got it.”

But he didn’t really get it. He wanted to be more than friends with benefits. But he’d go along with her wishes for now and see how things went. He didn’t want to push her into something she wasn’t ready for. She grew up in a home without love. And her relationship with Seth wasn’t what she deserved. It seemedthe man was nice enough. But he’d stifled the interesting, adventurous, and crazy side of Jade to the point of turning her into the woman who showed up at his door in a preposterous wedding gown and a pile of makeup. She needed time to realize he wasn’t going to do that to her. He loved her interesting, adventurous, and crazy side. He loved her.

Since Jade had her car, she would be following Sawyer. He walked her to the door of her car. “Please drive safe.”

“Of course.”

“This is going to be a lot longer drive without you sitting next to me.”

“We should’ve bought walkie talkies.”

“Yeah. Bummer we didn’t think of that.”

She gave him a kiss. “Breakfast down the road?”

“I know a great spot an hour out of town.”

“An hour?”

“You’ll make it.”

They stopped for breakfast and sat on opposite sides of a booth, holding a normal, friendly conversation. No one who saw them would ever guess they’d just spent two wildly intimate nights together.

The drive went by fairly fast. They stopped three more times for snacks and gas for Jade’s car. They opted for gas station hotdogs for lunch so they could get back on the road. At their final stop Jade gave him a hug.

“You look a little tired.”

“I’m fine. This is the best part of the drive. We’re about to hit the mountains. Then when we reach the pass, I feel like we’re almost there. Just a drop down into the valley.”

“You really do love Castle Springs, don’t you?”

He nodded. “I really do.”

Jade’s phone went off, and she read a text message. “Who’s Ricky?”

“Um…Ricky who owns The Corner Bar?”

“Yes, that makes sense. Jade ran into him in town and told him I was looking for a job.”

“Does he have something for you?”

“He wants me to come in on Friday.” She looked at Sawyer. “It’s not Ricky Lester is it?”

“Yeah. It is.”

“He owns The Corner Bar?”
