Polly closed her eyes. Seth kept his open. He couldn’t bear to miss a second of this. Her mouth was ever so slightly open and her soft, full lips were free of lipstick, naturally pink and devilishly inviting as she leaned closer still.

Her bottom lip touched his in the lightest brush. Oh, man. Now he had no choice but to close his eyes. He’d never known a moment so desperate with wanting.

Again, there was the softest quivering pressure as Polly’s lower lip met his. Seth may have given a small groan, and a heartbeat later she was teasing him with her lovely mouth, brushing both of her lips slowly, lightly over his, driving him wilder.

As she deepened the pressure, Seth could hold back no longer. Placing a hand to either side of her face, he held her just where he needed her, and now her sweet mouth was his.

So perfect. So utterly, mind-blowingly, heart-breakingly perfect.

They both went a little wild now, seeking, tasting, offering, taking. Their kiss went on and on, as if this might be the only kiss they would ever share and they needed to make the most of it.

It was Polly who finally pulled away. ‘Well,’ she said breathlessly. ‘That was—’ She didn’t finish, but offered him a stunned, rueful smile. ‘I—I’m not sure what that was.’

Tucking the pink-striped strand behind her ear, Seth kissed her again, tenderly. He wanted to tell her that it was the most amazing kiss in the history of kissing and most definitely the start of something big. But he was sure he should let Polly be in charge of this moment.

A guy could only hope.

‘But I guess maybe we have an answer,’ she said.

‘When it comes to kissing, I guess maybe we do.’

‘But where does it take us?’

Play it cool, Seth. ‘I have a few ideas.’

‘Might your ideas involve—’ Polly swallowed. She gave a helpless little smile. ‘Were you thinking we might move to your bedroom?’

‘That’s certainly an option.’ He reached for her hand, tugging gently, and it was the only invitation she needed.

Chapter Sixteen

Morning arrived withsoft, grey light filtering through varnished timber shutters. Polly lay very still in Seth’s big bed, listening to the sounds of her baby stirring in the room down the hall.

Her little honeybun often sang to herself in the mornings while she played in her cot with a toy or two. Usually, Polly went to her quite quickly, greeting her with a happy morning cuddle, but this morning, even though it was Summer’s birthday, Polly wasn’t in a hurry. Significant as this happy anniversary was, it had now been eclipsed by everything that had happened during the night.

Oh, man. How had she never known it could be like this?

Beside her, Seth was still asleep and she propped herself up onto one elbow, so she could admire his muscular shoulders and broad chest and indulge in a moment of quiet wonder. She still couldn’t quite believe that after all these years, she and Seth had finally broken the one rule that had always defined them.

And the world hadn’t come to an end.

Instead, Polly now had all kinds of answers. She now knew that her longings for Seth were unavoidably real and not mere imaginings. She knew that their friendship could expand, or ratherexplode, into the most sensationally romantic sex, more beautiful and intimate than anything she could have possibly dreamed. Biggest and scariest of all, she knew that she was in love with this man. Madly in love.

The all-or-nothing kind of love.

What she wasn’t so sure about was what she should do about this. After all, she’d made so much fuss about no strings.

Last night, she and Seth had been too busy having a sensational time to stop and talk about the future. And it would have been a crying shame to spoil such wondrous pleasure with a neurotic, Polly-style post-mortem.

She was well aware that friends often had sex without getting hung up. And they stayed friends. Friends with benefits. Would she be happy enough with that? Would Seth?

‘Mum, Mum, Mum,’ came Summer’s bubbling voice from down the hallway.

Polly swung her legs over the edge of the bed. She really should give her little girl her full attention today, so this morning wasn’t the right time for an angsty deep and meaningful between grown-ups.

Quickly, she pulled on the clothes she’d shed so frantically the night before and hurried down the hall.
