I opened the door and peered at Rosabel. Her eyes were wide, her expression frantic.

“Are you okay?”

“I’ll be right out,” I assured her. “I promise.”

“Duncan.”

“Everything is fine,” I lied. “I’ll be just a minute.”

“Okay,” she said reluctantly.

I gave her a little nod, closed the door, and rounded on Eudora, who was, thankfully, still standing there.

“What do you know about Wolf Industries?” I demanded. “What does that corporation have to do with The Pact?”

“I’ve never heard of such a place, boy.”

Boy. Like I was some idiotic child who had no right to be thinking or acting otherwise.

“Do you know where Ulrich is? Are you in contact with him?”

The more insistent I got, the more Eudora laughed at me. “I haven’t spoken to the Ulrich you knew in over ten years.”

“Then you don’t know who’s sending the threats to me?”

Her eyes softened. She peered behind her once more as though worried someone was around to overhear.

“I don’t. I moved here to get away from all of that, remember? But like you, the fraternity won’t leave me be. It’s cursed.”

What did she mean, the fraternity wouldn’t leave her be? What did she have to deal with because of it?

“I don’t believe in curses,” I said.

“Maybe it’s time you started. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to get to the matter of settling this house with my buyer.” She brushed her hands toward me as if shooing me away.

This was madness.

Cursed? That was utter nonsense. I went back to the one thing I could put any kind of stock in—the fact that she’d said she hadn’t spoken with Ulrich in ten years. If that was the case, then why did she bother warning me about my feelings for Rosabel?

What did she know? Really?

For all I knew, she was senile. She’d had some knowledge of things and was acting unreasonably in her old age, that was all.

And I’d given in to the bait.

“Forget it,” I said, turning my back on her.

I threw open the front door. Rosabel no longer stood on the porch but was down near the car, chewing her lip and staring at me, wrenching her hands in front of her stomach.

I stormed toward the car, toward her, all while emotion whirled like a hurricane inside of me. And for some reason, the only thing my thoughts kept focusing on after that interaction was the fact that Eudora had seen my feelings.

Was I that transparent? Were my feelings so obvious?

I didn’t stop to talk to Rosabel, who watched me with worry in her eyes. I couldn’t stand that look—mostly because I wantedto draw her to me and comfort her. I wanted to wipe her worries away.

But I couldn’t stand the thought of anything happening to her, so I walked right past her.

“Is everything okay?” she asked.
