When I drew close enough, he spoke first.

“Well, hey there, darlin’,” he drawled, cocking his head to the side and running his teeth over his bottom lip. I noticed the trimmed beard covering the lower portion of his face and couldn’t help but wonder how it would feel pressed against the inside of my thighs.

It was clear he spent time in the sun from the sun-kissed tan covering his body. My eyes wracked his body one more time, moving slowly over his pecs, down his rock-hard abs, and over the v line ridges protruding toward his waistline. I could picture myself licking each curve and muscle the whole way down.

“See something you like, sugar?” He broke my haze with his words, and I took a minute to reorient myself.

“Maybe.” I finally shrugged, playing it cool until I knew what he was all about.

“Maybe?” He smirked. “You not sure what you like?”

“I know what I like, not sure what I need,” I played back.

He bit his lip and nodded, letting me silently know he understood. “Maybe,” he repeated, “you can start with what brought you out here in the first place.”

Did he mean the beach or to Florida? Did he know I came from the rehab place over the dune? Does he think I am simply a lonely girl who walked too far down the beach?

“I came here to forget, to have a little fun.”

“You’ve come to the right place.” He smiled wider. “I have a little bit of everything.” His voice came out smooth, like spreadable butter, then he winked, and I couldn’t help the thrill it gave me. It wasn’t the same feelings I got around Ro, but it was something, and definitely more than Ro was returning at the moment.

“I hope so,” I said to encourage him further.

His smile turned devilish, and I knew he’d have a fix, at least for the night. “Stay here. I’ll be right back.” My eyes traced over the other people in his group. Some of them had a seedy appearance, but most were kids like the ones I used to know at home. Isn’t it interesting how you don’t have to search too hard anymore to find exactly what you need?

A bonfire had been started down the beach a little way, and I could see the flames from where I stood. I made my way toward it and was invited to grab a seat on the tree trunks lining it.

“Here you are.” I heard his voice before I turned to see the guy returning with a bag of goodies.

“Here I am,” I smiled up at him from my seated position.

“So here’s what I have.” He dipped his backpack my way, and my eyes almost rolled at all the goodies he had inside. Baggies of weed, coke, various other bottled drugs, and alcohol. “What’s your poison? Or were you seeking something a little more physical?”

I knew what he was alluding to—him—and I was definitely on board. As far as his bag went, I balked. I never questioned how hard I hit it, but at that moment, I second-guessed my decision. But weed… weed wasn’t so bad, right?

Then an image of Ro and his hot-and-cold ass took root in my brain, and I shrugged. “I’m down for whatever.”

He smiled at me, seeing right through me. “Who is he?”

“Who is who?”

“The guy we’re trying to forget…”

“Why do you think it’s about a guy?” It wasn’t,was it?I had a lot more than a hot nurse I wanted to forget. My childhood, my parents, my monster, myself.

“Just do.” He eyed me before dropping it. “So, you live around here?”

“Nope. I’m staying at Beachside right now.”

“Oh shit, this just keeps getting even better. What you in for?”

“Coke.”

“Good choice.” He laughed. “I have a friend who works over there. Always uptight but a good dude.”

“Who?” I started ticking the “good dudes” off in my head who worked at Beachside but was coming up short until…

“Wait, you know Nurse Ro?” I said, bristlier than I meant to.
