Page 96 of The Love We Make

Mom was right, I was in love with Madison.

Always had been.

Thatis why nothing changed.Thatis why it was hard to tell that my feelings were different. Because sex didn’t change how much I loved her, it only made it harder to suppress.

I ran from the porch and started to go toward the pier. Maybe if she saw me out there, she would come back as soon as possible. But when I looked out over the water, an idea hit me and I retreated back into my parents’ house. I found what I needed in record time and ran back out of the door.

I just hoped I could beat her before she thought I was a no-show.

Chapter 33

Madison

I was going to wait exactly an hour before I headed back to the pier. Not a minute before so I didn’t look as desperate as I felt.

I had grabbed a snack, told mom and dad Ethan was in town and eyed mom to keep quiet. She just winked at me and kept doing what she was doing.

I splashed water on my face and then stared at a picture of us from when we were 12-years-old that was in my room.

He had a crush on me.

I smiled at the thought.

A crush seemed so minor and easy. A crush was innocent. It paled in comparison to whatever I felt now, and I found myself longing for the days when crushes were a big deal.

I looked at the picture and tried to imagine what he was thinking that day. He had no shirt on and had an arm slung over my shoulders. I was in a bathing suit and we were posing before getting on the boat that day.

Our parents always had boat days together. We would tube on the lake and fish. Sometimes we would be out there all day swimming and having fun. I kinda missed those days.

I set the picture down and made my way to the pier at exactly the hour mark.

Ethan should have had plenty of time to hug his parents and come up with some lame excuse for why he was home. His mom probably tried feeding him or something.

I knew he would be at the pier eventually but I didn’t expect him to beat me.

Yet, when I walked up, there he stood. Right where we had been sitting only an hour ago. I took a deep breath as I took him in.

He was in shorts and a t-shirt, his hat was backward and sunglasses nowhere to be found. The sun had set and it was practically dark out now. But I could see his smile and the way he bit his lip as I got closer.

“Been waiting long?” I asked, smiling back at him.

“I literally just got here, I wanted to beat you here but didn’t think I would make it.”

I looked across the street and around the open fields that surrounded our houses. “Afraid there would be traffic?” I joked.

“Yeah, at the boat ramp,” he said and motioned behind him. It was then I noticed he had his dad’s boat pulled up to the pier. The same one we used to spend our summer days on. “Let’s go for a ride.”

He reached his hand out for me to take and I grabbed on, following him to the boat. He jumped down and then grabbed me and lifted me in next to him. I was kinda giddy. I loved boats and riding around on the water.

It had been years since I had been out though, and I don’t think I had ever been out after dark. It was mystical and kinda scary.

Once we were both in, Ethan started the boat up and made his way into the open water of the lake. The lake wasn’t the biggest in the world but it was large enough to fish and have fun on. I found myself closing my eyes and embracing the cool night wind on my face. I almost felt like I was flying.

Wow, Rose, I get you now. Maybe you were flying.

I opened my eyes as the boat slowed down to see where we were. But we weren’t anywhere. We were right in the middle of the lake. Still, Ethan cut the engine and threw an anchor out to keep us from drifting.

“We fishing?” I asked, seriously wondering what his plans were.
