I decided that the weekend at the golf tournament would be my new start. The first time I faced people since my heart imaginarily broke from something that didn’t actually exist.

That was how I had to look at it—imaginary.

Because my heart didn’t really break. My heart was feeling the same. But it was fooled into thinking that sex changed me. It was fooled into thinking I couldn’t be friends with Ethan again.

But I could.

And I would.

Starting on Saturday when I reported for caddy duty, I would be better and ready to move on. Meanwhile, I just had to get through a Friday at work.

Kristin had been indifferent about my weekend with Ethan. As far as she knew, we were two best friends going to the All-star game together. She didn’t know I was no longer a virgin and unlike the cliché, she couldn’t see it “written all over my face.”

So for her, life was just the same. “Hey, you wanna go out tonight?”

I looked up from my desk where she was standing in front of me. “I can’t, I am doing a charity thing tomorrow and I need to sleep.”

“Charity?” She asked incredulously. “Like for free? Ew, Madison.”

I sighed, already tired of her bullshit. I considered her a friend, a close friend. But that didn’t mean she didn’t drive me crazy. And her snide attitude about me working “for free,” instead of going out with her, made me cringe.

“Yep. And I am not in the mood for your remarks. However, if you want to join me, I am sure they can use more volunteers.” I didn’t mention the charity was for Chase Turner. Or that there were going to be other famous faces there. Because I knew she would say yes for just those reasons.

But as I expected, she deflected for a no. “What is going on with you? You seemed so excited to be going to the All-star game and now that you’re back, you’ve looked miserable. What did Ethan do this time?”

Oh shit, if she only knew.

But she wouldn’t and couldn't. Because that was part of the deal. Plus, I didn’t want to fill her in. I was convinced she would somehow taint the memory for me.

“Nothing. It was just a whirlwind and I am exhausted. I have spent all week catching up on work and now I have to do this charity commitment. So nothing is wrong other than the fact that I am tired.”

She eyed me, debating the truthfulness in my words. But she wouldn’t find any lies on my face, because everything I said was technically true.

“Mkay,” she started. “I will lay off. But next weekend? Girls’ night?”

I nodded. A girls’ night would be exactly what I would need since that was when Ethan would be back in Atlanta. I would be tempted to call him. “Count me in for that one.”

“Good. Now I am taking off early. Later.” She waved a hand behind her as she left my office. I didn’t bother responding, she was gone before I could anyway.

???

“Madison, you made it!” I walked into the clubhouse of the golf course and immediately heard my name. Becca was walking toward me with her arms open for a hug.

“I did. Glad I can be here to help.”

“Well, this is our first year doing this so it is very chaotic. Most of the ‘celebrity golfers’ play for the Kings and their schedule changing really made this that much crazier. Luckily, Chase knows everyone and was able to pull a full event together.”

“Well, just tell me how I can help.”

“Margie has everyone assigned to something while we wait on the golfers. You and I can finish filling all the coolers up. By the time we are done, the golfers will be trickling in.”

I nodded and smiled. I was glad she and I would be working together for the first bit. It gave me time to get situated and get used to the flow.

She and I chatted back and forth, laughing about this and that. I saw Ali walk by and she waved but didn’t stop the mission she had been on. Once the coolers were full of ice, water, and beer, we loaded them onto the back of the golf carts that would travel around handing drinks out as needed.

“You still ok being a caddy for a team?”

“Of course,” I said, with not much enthusiasm. I was willing to do whatever they needed me to do but I had no idea how to caddy. Especially for four players at once.
