Folded.

Crumbled.

Disintegrated.

I would say yes to anything with his mouth on me.

So from the 6th inning on, I sat out in the late-August heat with no shade, no fan, no water, no breaks, no nothing. All in hopes he kept pitching the way he had been the whole game—lights out.

And he did.

Also, to his credit, he didn’t pull that shit where he called timeout and made me wait longer. But the heat was just too much and as soon as I stood up after the game had ended, I fainted. Something about my body moving quickly and the lack of fluids and whatever else the nurse said.

“It was worth it, you pitched a perfect game, Ethan!” I was excited and feeling better. The IV fluids they had given me had started working instantly.

Ethan stopped pacing and looked up at me. His hat was back on his head, backward. His jersey was still tucked in and he looked so damn good I almost fainted again. The smirk on his face said,“Yes, I just pitched a perfect game.”I loved it when he was cocky and proud.

Just like when he pitched to Aaron in the All-star game, Ethan’s “walk the walk and talk the talk” attitude made me fangirl. And in the last few weeks that Ethan and I had been together—officially—I let myself fangirl any time I wanted.

Ethan loved it.

“You ever think that I could have pitched that perfect game without your superstitions?” He asked.

“No,” I shook my head adamantly. “It is a known fact. The second you acknowledge the perfect game, it's over. So you’re welcome.”

He laughed at me and bit his lip. I could tell I was softening him up. He was letting his worry over me subside and was replacing it with a “perfect game” buzz.

“Hey!” I looked at the door and saw Becca coming in. She and I had become really good friends since the golf tournament. “How’s the patient?”

“I’m fine. Better with this,” I said with a smile and lifted up my arm with the IV.

“Whew, I have to report back to the crew. They’re worried.”

The crew, as she mentioned, was actually my new group of friends: Becca, Ali, Cam, and even Chase.

Especially Chase.

After Ethan and I told everyone we were officially together, Chase told me the real reason he agreed to follow me around was because he knew how Ethan felt about me. Even if Ethan didn’t know himself. He loved Ethan like a little brother and hoped we would end up together.

I forgave Chase. I thanked Chase.

On the flip side, Kristin and I didn’t talk much anymore. We weren’t enemies but I used my relationship with Ethan as a means to avoid going out with her and the other girls. I think I always knew we weren’t compatible friends but that didn’t mean I wished her ill-will. I just knew I needed more down to earth people in my life. People who liked to volunteer at charity events and watch baseball over going to bars.

Plus, Ethan held a grudge over them for constantly trying to peer pressure me into having sex. Even after I told him it was my own fault for weakening and succumbing to those pressures.

“She isn’t allowed to come to any more day games in August,” Ethan chirped at Becca.

“I didn’t even want to come to this one,” I teased.

Ethan rolled his eyes and turned around to start pacing again.

Becca looked to me in amusement, “Are you sure that guy just pitched a perfect game? He is kinda being an asshole for someone that just reached baseball perfection.”

“He’s nuts, I tell ya.”

Becca laughed again and we chatted for a few more minutes. She left, satisfied that I was ok and told me she would send everyone else home.

Ethan, meanwhile, was back to being in my face.
