“You’ve been pretty busyyourself.”

Her shrewd gaze inspected my face. “Is that why you’reuphere?”

“Nah.” I took a sip of my warm, foul-tasting beer. I was glad Nina and Zar had gotten together, relieved they’d worked out their issues and had their little honeymoon. I did think he’d kept Nina for himself a little too long, but I was willing to work with him on that. Maybe now our lousy odds would improve. “I don’t blame him for wanting to hole upwithyou.”

“I have to say, the three of you impress with your willingness to share.” She pulled out a sandwich from the bag and handed it over. “From Tanner withlove.Eat.”

“Aye, aye, ma’am.” I unwrapped the sandwiched and took a bite, only to discover I was starving. I wolfed a half down and got started on theotherhalf.

“If mankind was more like the three of you, there’d be no more wars in the world,” Nina mumbled, nibbling on her own sandwich. “Unfortunately, mankind is morelikeme.”

I cocked a brow at her. “More dataplease?”

“I’m a selfish bitch,” she said with a mouthful before she swallowed. “Right now, if I had to share you with another woman, I’d befurious.”

“Really?” I grinned likeafool.

“Madashell.”

“For the record…” I gulped down the last of my sandwich. “I’d be mad as hell if I had to share you with anyone other than Tanner and Zar. It’s you and us, period. How did it gowithZar?”

“It was interesting.” She put down the remains of her food. “Intense.”

“So,” I said, balling the aluminum foil in my fist. “Did you like the kinkystuff?”

“I lo-oh-ved the kinky stuff!” The grin she flashed me superheated my blood and sent it gushing to mygroin.

“Are you sure?” I worried that Nina had taken up kink just to please andappeaseZar.

“Totally sure.” Her grin widened. “We’ve got to try itsometime.”

“Sounds like a plan.” I aimed and shot the little silver ball into the backpack. “You gonna tie me up or am I gonna tieyouup?”

“I’m flexible, and I mean that in more ways than one,” she said with a straight face that had me laughing again. “So whatever floats yourbubble.”

Shefloated my bubble. Not only did she make me laugh, but she also made me wonder why I’d been alone for the last coupleofdays.

“So,” she said, “are you going to tell me why you are up here with only that little pile forcompany?”

I glanced at the stash of empty bottles. “That’s only twenty-four beers over there. At fourteen grams of alcohol per twelve liquid ounces, that makes three hundred and thirty-six grams of alcohol divided over a seventy-two hour period, which comes out to an average of four point six grams per hour, not enough to make a dent in an adult of my weight andheight.”

“Why thanks for that very thorough mathematical explanation of your psyche.” She didn’t back down. “But you’re not a math problem to me. What I want to know is why you’re up here instead of with us at home where youbelong.”

On the up side, she’d called our place home and told me I belonged with her. On the down side, she wanted me to talk about my junk. I wished I had a spare beerrightnow.

“Tell me the truth,” she said. “Is it thewedding?”

The prospect of having to go to the wedding wasn’t helpful to my mood, but I’d already made up my mind. I had to follow Nina into the world or risk losing her. I had no choice. “I’m gonna go.Period.”

“Okay,” she said. “Then what’scooking?”

I sighed. She wasn’t gonna give up until I told her. I reached in my pocket, pulled out the piece of paper that had thrown me into a loop, and handed it to Nina. She didn’t ask what it was. She simply unfolded the letter andreadit.

“I see.” She refolded the paper and gave it back to me. “So the medical board wants a new eval before making their final decision. What do youthink?”

I didn’t want to be medically discharged from the service, but it was about time that some decisions got made. Was I going to make them or was I going to let a bunch of people who knew squat about memakethem?

“Are you afraid you won’t pass your medical eval?” Nina asked. “Or are you afraid that you will pass it and then you’ll have to make some moredecisions?”
