When the door opened, all thoughts of him disappeared because Beau and Elliot walked in. They looked exhausted and while it was good to see them, they weren’t who I really wanted to see.

“Amber, love,” Elliot said, coming over to me. “We’re so glad to see you awake.”

“How are you feeling?” Beau asked and then chuckled. “Stupid question. Sorry, sweetheart.”

“Where’s Ronnie?”

I didn’t miss the look between them. The furtive glance that told me a lot.

“I don’t know why he was with me.” My bottom lip began to tremble as I thought about how Ronnie must have felt with Jimmy being in the room with me. “I can’t even remember what happened.”

Elliot and Beau moved to the side of the bed, Beau smoothing a hand over my hair. “You fell down a flight of stairs. We think you’d gone to the toilet up there.”

“Why was Jimmy with me here in the hospital? Did he go in the ambulance with me?”

Elliot’s jaw tightened as he nodded. “Yeah, he was with you at the bottom of the stairs when we got there.”

I felt sick. He’d been sitting next to me watching the awards, but as soon as it had finished, I’d been out of there. I told him I was going back to the hotel and if anyone asked to say I had a headache. He’d tried to argue that Concepta would want me to stay around for photographs, but I’d basically told him they could shove it. Enough was enough for one night.

“Where is Ronnie?” I asked.

Elliot leaned forward and gently wiped the tear I’d been unaware of from my cheek. “Joey took him back to the hotel. He wasn’t handling things very well.”

“That Jimmy was here?”

They exchanged that glance again and I knew. Beyond any doubt I knew that Ronnie knew about the baby.

“It’s not Jimmy’s,” I said, my heart beating hard. “It isn’t. It can’t be.”

“Jimmy says otherwise, love.” Elliot swallowed hard.

“I left him nearly two months ago and I can’t remember when we last…” I shook my head. “It’s not his. I don’t even have a bump of any kind. I’ve had no signs, so it’s not his, I’m sure of it.”

“Do you know how f—”

At that moment the door opened, and a doctor walked in. He smiled at me and nodded at Beau and Elliot.

“Gentlemen, good to see you again. Mrs Fox, I am so glad to see that you are awake. How is your head feeling?” He picked up my chart and read it before looking back to me with another smile. “Do you need some painkillers?”

I nodded. “Please.”

“I’ll get Nurse Hauffman to organise that for you. We will observe you for another twenty-four hours and then we will release you under the care of your husband.” I shook my head, but he continued. “You must rest for a few days and once you get back to England, which I believe is in four more days, yes?”

“Yep,” Beau said. “We go back on Friday after our last gig.”

The doctor nodded. “Once you are back in England you must visit your own doctor.”

“We’ll make sure of it,” Elliot added.

The doctor frowned, probably not able to understand why two rock stars, who weren’t my husband, were agreeing to take care of me. Not to mention the absence of my husband who he actually thought was going to be the one doing the nursing.

“We will give you a copy of your charts and your treatment.” He replaced the chart and crossed his arms over his chest. “Do you have any other questions?”

I had one huge one. “C-could you tell me how far along I am, please? In my pregnancy. How many weeks pregnant am I?”

“You weren’t aware you were pregnant?” He nodded. “That is understandable as you are very early in your pregnancy. If you can tell me the date of your last period, then I can be a little more precise. It was your blood work which told us.”

I knew exactly when it was. “The first day of my last period was the fourth.”
