“Have a nice day, did you?” Destiny asked as we reached the lifts.

Ronnie gave me a shy smile. “Amazing.”

“Perfect.”

Destiny shook her head. “Fucking hell. I can’t stand it. I’ve had to watch Beau sucking face with Simone all pissing night.”

“They not gone to the party?” Ronnie asked.

“Nope. None of them. Not even cock brain because his little army warmy hurts.” She stabbed at the button for the lift. “Fucking baby.”

The lift arrived and the door slid open. “Right, I’ll leave you to it.” Destiny stood to one side and swept an arm for us to go in.

“What are you going to do?” Ronnie asked, leading me in and pressing the button to hold the doors.

Destiny cackled. “On a promise with a South African guy here on business. He’s young, single, and built like a brick shit house, so imagine how huge his damn dick will be.”

“Fucking hell, Dest,” Ronnie groaned. “Anyway, I thought you had a boyfriend back home.”

She narrowed her eyes on him. “That’s what I want people to believe. It makes for less questions. So, if you ever breathe a word otherwise, not only will I make sure you’re in the shadow on stage every night, but I’ll also skin your bollocks and then give them to a stray cat to play with.”

Ronnie gulped and I giggled and waved as the doors closed on a cackling Destiny.

“She gets worse,” Ronnie said, actually sounding scared as the lift started to move.

“I think she’s enjoying life after going through such crap.”

“She never told us much. Just that she lived with, in her words, the biggest wanker on the planet. We guessed it was a violent relationship because she does a lot of volunteering for a refuge for victims of domestic abuse.”

It was Destiny’s story to tell, so I just nodded and waited for the lift to get to our floor. When it jolted to a halt, my heart dropped. Our day was almost at an end.

“Here we are.” Ronnie sounded as disappointed as I felt. When he led me out, still clasping my hand, his shoulders slumped. “The end of our first date.”

We walked slowly along the corridor towards our rooms, and I wondered what was about to happen. Should I invite him in? Would he invite himself in? Would he suggest I go to his room?

When we got to my door, he stopped outside and pulled me a little closer to him. I was tall, but still had to look up at him, and felt a rush at the expression of reverence that I saw. Ronnie’s eyes searched my face as he gently brushed away the hair that had escaped my ponytail.

“You’re so beautiful,” he whispered.

“And you’re so handsome.”

He gave me a soft smile. “I’ve had the best day ever. I hope you have, too.”

“The very best. I’ve loved every minute.” Resting my hands at his waist, I inched a little closer. “Thank you.”

“My absolute pleasure. I wish it didn’t have to end.” My heart jumped, wondering what he might suggest. “But I think we should.”

“You do?” I asked, my tone full of deep regret.

Ronnie laughed and pulled me to him, wrapping his arms around my shoulders. “I know I’m a dick, but yes, I do. I love your disappointment, though.” After kissing the top of my head, he manoeuvred me back so that he could look at me. “I don’t want to rush this and fuck it up. Okay?”

I nodded. “Okay.”

His lips then met mine and as his hands cupped my face, he kissed me softly. I leaned into him and angled my head as Ronnie’s tongue parted my lips. My hand went up his t-shirt to find bare skin and hard ridges and the desperation to rip off his top was all-encompassing. My fingertips ran down his abs hovering above the waistband of his jeans. When he let out a groan, I felt sure he was going to change his mind and beat down my hotel room door. Instead, he broke the kiss and took my hand from under his shirt, lacing our fingers together.

“We need to say goodnight, Amber,” he said, his voice strained.

“Really?”
