“Never did I expect to hear Cash Stiles admit he was wrong.”

“Don’t get used it. Listen, Toni. I called for a reason. I’m worried about Rylee.”

“What, why?” Her voice peaks.

I explain the call I received earlier, and she screams down the phone, “I fucking knew it. Ahh, when I get my hands on that fucking creep, it’s game over for him.”

“Yeah, same, but right now, I can’t find Rylee. She read my text earlier, and then her phone went off. Do you have any idea where she could be?”

“Yes! She put a picture up on her Instagram of the sea. She is at the beach, Cash!”

“Okay, I will head down there now.”

“Cash, please keep me updated and let me know once you are with her.”

“Will do, Toni. Thanks.” I put the phone down and sigh at knowing where she is. She loves the beach, so I don’t know why I didn’t think of it.

Chapter three

Cash

Iexhalealongbreath as soon as I see Rylee’s car. Of course she would be here. It wouldn’t surprise me if she has been here every day since I was last at the apartment. I pull up next to her car and sit there, unsure what I should do next. Should I look for her, wait here until she gets back to the car, or park up somewhere else and watch from afar.

I slam my hands down on the steering wheel. “Fuck this.” Before I know it, I’m out of the car and walking down the pathway to the beach. I’m slightly annoyed she is still here. Although it’s one of the safest beaches around, it is nearing darkness.

After a quick glance, I don’t spot her. She may be closer to the shoreline. I jump down into the sand and trudge through; wearing work shoes wasn’t the best idea. As I get nearer to the shoreline, I scan the beach. The shoreline is no more than a mile long and I can see all the way down, but it’s empty.

For fuck’s sake, Rylee, where are you? With each step I take, my heart rate picks up, and dread washes over me the longer I go without seeing her. She isn’t here.

“Fuck!” I scream, looking up at the sky as if it will give me the map to her. I reach into my pocket, knowing I need to ring Toni, as I walk back through the sand toward the car.

“Cash? Are you with her,” Toni rushes out.

“She’s not fucking here,” I grit out.

“What do you mean, not there?” she screeches.

“As in, no where to be fucking seen, Toni. Her car is here, she is not.” I don’t have time for her questions. I jump up into the parking lot and pace toward Rylee’s car. Toni is still screeching and panicking, but I don’t take in anything she says. As I get closer, something glistens near her car. My pace picks up, then I crouch down, and there lies Rylee’s keys. Sweat beads on my forehead as my gut tells me something isn’t right.

“Toni, I need you to shut the fuck up and listen to me.” She goes deadly silent, as if shocked by my tone. Normally, Toni would tear me a new one, but I assume she knows I’m not fucking around.

“Her car and apartment keys are lying on the ground near her car door. I need you to call around to everyone and ask if they have seen her. Do you understand me?”

“Ye-Yes. Cash?”

“Yes?” I sigh out.

“She will be okay, won’t she?” Toni’s sniffles fill my ears. I stay silent, and her cries get stronger.

“If he has hurt one hair on her head, I will make sure he pays, Toni. I promise.” I put the phone down before Toni can ask too many questions. My need to protect Rylee is how any father-in-law would react, isn’t it? But why do I feel like I will tear every single person’s head off until I find her. Why do I feel like I will tear a whole fucking city apart until I find her? Something tells me that isn’t very father-in-law of me. Even though I was never technically her father-in-law.

“Breathe, Cash. Think. Think.” I bring up Rylee’s number and call her again, but it goes straight to voicemail.

I need to ring Bridge and Boh to let them know what’s going on.

I couldn’t bring myself to call Bridget. I don’t want to worry Bridge, she is a huge worrier and with being away, this will send her over the edge. I called Boh and asked him to call Bridge and explain everything. I know she will freak out, and I can’t deal with that headspace. I need to think straight. Think where she could be. Has she even been taken?

I pace the length of Rylee’s car, back and forth, and my gaze keeps flicking out to sea. She wouldn’t. No. I can’t think like that. She wouldn’t leave us like that. I exhale a long breath, and I lean on the hood of Rylee’s car. I need to ring Casey.
