“Who are you?” the man asks.

“Looks like he’s Eli's new toy,” the redhead replies, eyes still covered. “The psycho does have great taste in men.”

“You shut up and let me handle this or we’ll go to the strip club and see how much you like me looking at naked women,” the guy tells her.

“Fine,” she huffs, shoulders visibly deflating. “Sorry. Pregnancy hormones have got me so strung out.”

“And I’m going to give those hormones everything they need as soon as we figure this shit out,” the guy tells her, giving her a kiss on the top of her head.

“So, let’s all start over,” I suggest. “My name is Jordan and I’m Eli’s...friend, but I also came to Vegas for Maddie. Madison Salvato. Do you know her? By chance, do you have the same mobster daddy?”

“Did he just call her Maddie?” the redhead asks, Cassie I think he called her.

“How do you know Madison?” the guy questions me.

“Great! You know her too then?”

“Answer the question,” he barks.

“Right, okay so Maddie and I spent the past year living together in Rockland. I thought she was my wife, that we got hitched here in Vegas after we met at the Alto Bar at Caesar’s Palace. Ever been there? Great place. Anyway, we weren’t actually married, and I didn’t know she was the daughter of a mob boss. When she left, to keep the Savage Kings, that’s my biker club, when she left to keep them from killing Eli for kidnapping me and murdering some assholes in town, I let her go, you know? And I thought it was the right decision at the time, but I’ve missed her like crazy. Eli too oddly enough. And then Maddie called me the other night, which is when I realized that she misses me too. Except, she told me not to call her back, and I knew she was full of shit, that shedidwant me to call her but didn’t want her father to find out about me. So, I finally grew a pair and hopped on a plane to come see her and Eli. The guards snagged me as soon as I walked into the casino and brought me down here.”

“Wow,” the guy mutters.

“What day is it? I think I've been here a day or two.”

“Jeez. He talks a lot,” Cassie remarks.

“There was a lot to explain,” I tell her. “So now will you let me down?”

“Should we call Eli to confirm all of this?” the guy asks.

“Nah. I think we should let him down,” Cassie says cheerfully.

“I like you. I like her,” I tell the man. “I mean, not likelikeher. She’s obviously knocked up and I’m guessing it’s yours. I just like how she thinks. She seems like a kind woman.”

The man chuckles. “That’s probably the first time anyone has ever said that about Cassie.”

“Asshole!” she huffs as she reaches back to smack him in the side of the head. Then she says to me, “I’m Cass, Madison’s sister.”

“Right. Maddie never told me she had any sisters, but Eli did. He also told me that you all lost your moms too. Sorry about all that.”

“I’m Cole, their stepbrother and Cass’s husband,” the guy explains.

“Oh. Nice to meet you. Now will you please let me down?”

“How do we actually know that anything you said was true? Just because you talk a mile a minute doesn’t mean you’re not a really good liar.” Cole remarks.

“True. Um, let me think about that. How do I prove what I’m saying is true? You could ask Maddie, but I was really hoping to surprise her. Oh, look at my jacket! My leather cut has the Rockland, Virginia patch on it. Maddie told you that’s where she spent the last year, right? With me?”

“She told Daddy and us that she was living with some private investigator and Eli claimed to have killed him.”

“Ah, classic Maddie and Eli. They were trying to protect me, and to avoid starting a war with the Savage Kings since we’re sort of a big deal on the East Coast.”

“If you say so,” she replies.

“I do.”

“Who is the dead guy?” Cole asks, nodding his chin to Darren.
