“Now, you’re going to listen,” he said.

She stared at him. Couldn’t this wait?

“I went to Maine to kill Huskin.”

She stiffened. Cold, hard reality replaced her drowsy weightlessness. Gavin, who was still inside her, rocked, sending pleasurable zaps through her still sensitive body.

“You know what kind of man I am,” he said as his eyes bored into hers. “I’m not the schmuck who will stand aside while another man who has history with my wife makes a play. No man is allowed to touch you. No man is allowed to come between us. You don’t protect another man from me. Huskin overstepped. He knows the rumors about me and still made a play for you, one he knew could mean his life. He made that decision.”

Gavin brushed his hand down her cheek. He was watching her closely.

“You understand?” he asked.

Grudgingly, she nodded and felt him relax a little. He kissed her brow and continued to shift inside her as if he wanted to keep her ready for another round.

“You don’t choose another man over me, Lyla.”

She wasn’t! As if he could read her thoughts, he leaned in closer.

“You did. I’m your first priority, not some ex you haven’t seen in years, even if he has a heart of gold,” he sneered. “I was raised to take what I want and destroy anybody in my way.” His hands smoothed down her sides. “I don’t take chances with you.”

“But—”

Gavin clamped his hand over the gag. “Hush, baby girl.”

She glared at him.

“I get it,” he said.

Get what?

“I get why you were with him.” He burrowed deeper inside her so that her mouth fell open on a gasp. “You wanted sweet and normal, baby girl, but you aren’t. You never were. You were pretending. What you had with him, not real. You feel this?”

He rocked inside her. Her toes curled, and her moan filled the room.

“This is what I’m fighting for, what I’ll die for. You were made for me. Maybe I’m not what you wanted, but I’m what you need.” He kissed away a tear at the corner of her eye. “You should have told him about Nora from the start.”

She jerked. How could he know that?

“Knowing you had a kid made a difference to him. Why do you think I insisted on getting you pregnant? It matters, having a baby together. It binds you irrevocably to me. Even he gets that.” He tugged on her earlobe with his teeth. “You think I don’t have time to listen to your phone calls? You’re wrong. Everything that concerns you is my top priority. Don’t ever make the mistake of thinking you come second to anything.”

He began to move with more purpose.

“Huskin’s resourceful and now an employee of mine.”

She couldn’t believe it.

“He created a sophisticated surveillance system designed to send evidence to another source within hours of my crime.” He tucked his head beside hers and muttered, “Fucker’s too smart for his own good.”

“Gavin,” she huffed.

He nuzzled her sweetly while his body drove her nuts.

“Being thousands of miles away when you needed me...” His voice changed, became rougher. “Worst feeling in the world knowing I left you open for that sadistic fuck to—”

There was an anguished note in his voice. She raised her hand to touch him, but it was still bound.

“I fucked up. I’ll take whatever you want to throw at me. You shouldn’t have been put in a position to do the things you had to do.” He raised his head and looked at her. “But thank fuck you did. I’m going to make the Phantom suffer. I’m going to bring you his head so you know it’s really over.” He brushed his thumb over her bottom lip. “Do you hate me, baby?”
