Xander called after me, but if I stopped, I might have a moment to really rethink my fuck up of a life.

“Cali? Wait up.”

I flipped him off, but not because I hated him. More because, well, I was just fucking angry at all men right now.

“You’ve got long legs, you’ll be fine.”

And he was. Less than a second later, he was next to me, keeping pace. It was hard not to side-eye him even if I was trying to pretend like I didn’t see just how good looking he was.

Fuck, he was huge.

“You ready then? For the party?”

Ready?

I stopped and laughed at the question.

“I smell like death. Not that you lot aren’t all into that and stuff, but I prefer not to wear my work to a party. I live a block up from here. Walk me there?”

Shit. What was I doing?

Somehow, I had decided this devil was far safer than the demons chasing me.

The shadows in my past had done a number on me if I thought his hands weren’t more red than any of the Vipers who haunted me.

The thing was, the way he smiled at me? It could have been a skeezy look that said he thought he would get lucky. It could have been mocking, like Ripple might have been. It could have been a look that said he thought he was some kind of hero.

He knew he was none of those things. With that fire in his eyes? He was anything but my savior.

How coulda woman that works with the dead seem to have a more haunted look than me? She seemed to mask it well, and who was I to pry open Pandora’s box. I didn’t do that kind of thing. I suppose, if she had something I needed, I’d do a lot. With her, though? I actually wanted to walk with her.

“Sure. I wouldn’t have let you walk with garbage like that lurking around here,” I said.

What the hell was her story? I studied her like some kind of answer would just pop out of nowhere and tell me everything I needed to know about this woman.

Instead, I had to contend with my cock, thinking it was going to get some kind of action and my brain telling me we needed to protect her. I didn’t know that she actually needed my protection though.

She kind of scared me, and then there was the little detail of who she hung around with.

I didn’t like that she was any part of the Vipers. I needed her out of that little shit show of a circus. The issue?

Well, there was a list. But the biggest issue of all was that I might actually be wasting brain space on that shit idea. I wasconsidering how to get her out, and that meant I was a little too into Calliope.

She still hadn’t looked away from me, like she was waiting for more of an answer.

“Alright, Sparky. Lead on. Better leave before he grows a pair and comes back out here and I have to break more than just his nose.”

Her eyes darted to the double doors. Before I could say another word, she spun back around and took off at her ass-on-fire pace. She wasn’t running, but damn if she wasn’t close.

I normally would never chase after a woman, but right now? Fuck. I was willingly keeping up and just following.

My phone beeped and I ignored it. If it were an emergency, they’d call. Still, I was going to have to relay this little mess. Things hadn’t been all that calm with the Vipers recently, but this? I walked a fine line between war and peace.

“Wanna tell me what that was all about? If I’m starting a war, I’d like to know what the war is about.”
