As the elevator came to a stop at the ground floor, I pulled Rylee behind my back as we all pressed ourselves against the walls, giving the doors a second to open.
Zeid was the first to walk out.
“It’s clear. It seems he held up his end of the bargain. Get her in the car, I need to make sure he kept all cameras off.”
X and I helped keep her up and moving. He winked at me, and if it were anyone else, I would have shot him for touching her, and he fucking knew it.
“Let me go first. That fucking alley is tiny as fuck, and who knows if someone towed the Escalade,” X said.
I gave him a nod, and he took off out the door.
“Rylee, I can’t read you. Are you really okay?”
She wasn’t shaking or a blubbering mess. I wasn’t sure how to deal with a calm, complacent Rylee any more now than I had been back then.
“I think I’m okay. I’m confused.”
Confused, I could work with that.
The bit of light through the entrance to the alley eclipsed as X backed the Escalate closer to us.
“Is that our ride?”
I nodded and kept her walking.
“How did you find me?”
Fuck.
“Where is your car?”
It seemed to take her a few seconds before she caught up on the conversation.
“Across the street.”
“Hand me your keys,” I demanded.
She pulled out a single key from a pocket in that leather coat she’d worn.
“Sure, here.”
I got her to where the SUV was and looked inside.
“Zeid back yet?”
X shook his head.
“Okay, get her back to our place. I’ll get Zeid and her car.”
He nodded, but Rylee stopped halfway in the door.
“Wait, no. I don’t want to leave here without you.”
I pulled her hands from around my neck, but I slipped my own hand along hers and let our fingers intertwine, something I don’t think I’d ever done with anyone before. It was oddly calming to hold her hand.
“Blossom, there’s obviously some shit we don’t understand. Xander will keep you safe until I can get Zeid. Let us protect you.”
I didn’t know how to handle the way she looked at me. She saw me like no one ever had, and maybe that was why she had caught me in her web all those years ago.
