I nodded, and she walked on in. X on the other hand, was paying far more attention than seemed fitting for his ADHD ass.

“Need a photo or something, shithead?”

X blinked.

“What the fuck happened to Howie?”

The door squealed in protest as she went in.

“With the number of dead bodies, he needs to have fucking help. I’d guess she’s it.”

X pushed past me and started to follow her.

“You going in to get your fill of death, then? Or is it for some pink-haired, gum-chewing, off-her-rocker coroner?” I asked.

He flipped me off and kept walking.

“You going in too, Zeid?”

There were no sirens. No fanfare. This was the best that sick fuck would get from the police. The nerve of him to die here.

“Yeah, I guess so. If for no other reason than to see who that car belongs to. You could have sent me to check this out. Sure it’s some kind of message, but it’s not the first. Won’t be the last. You could already be at the gym if you wanted.”

He tipped his head down the street.

“Does any of this odd behavior have anything to do with Rylee? I know she’s back in town. I’ve been watching you sneak around and decided to hang out at Gran’s. She spilled all the beans about a new girl upstairs.”

Fucking Gran.

“She better not be blabbing to everyone.”

He took a step towards the house.

“I doubt it. She knows who she’s talking to. But she felt like I should know you’ve been hanging around a lot more than you ever used to.”

I flipped him off.

“It’s called stalking when the girl doesn’t know you’re there,” he said.

There were too many voices fighting in my head right now. One asking who else had noticed her. Another wondering if I should lock my damn gran away before she told the wrong fucking person.

“Look, you knew who her father was. She should never have come back here, but she did. She doesn’t know it yet, but her aunt is dead and literally she wouldn’t have gone back, anyway. We’re going to be the closest thing to a family that girl will ever get again.”

Zeid was nodding like a goddamn bobble head.

“Yeah. From what I saw the other day, girl doesn’t really sound accurate. That girl grew up and has a fucking body.”

Instinct kicked in and I punched him.

“Fuck, dude.” Zeid was laughing. “Got it. Well, I’ll go in and check on our girl then, since I now know that’s her car. I’m not too bad at stalking myself.”

Heat flared inside of me, and I had to remember this was Zeid.

“Not our girl,” was all I said instead.

He chuckled and started to walk away. “Yeah, noted. Well, let’s hope this shit doesn’t take too long to wrap up since you just called an emergency meeting and something tells me you aren’t leaving here until she does.”

I wanted to tell him he was wrong, but I knew that I wasn’t going to be able to leave her. I couldn’t let her go. I’d done my damn best to distance myself. I’d hired out people to watch her, telling myself that she was nothing to me. A crush that was never explored. But the second she got back and I had too much access to her, I had to admit that she’d become an obsession.
