They just shared a look.

“Right. Got it. Well, you two can sit here and look pretty. If you don’t sound any alarms, then you will live to breathe another day. Probably. Don’t test us.”

They were quiet as X tied up one and I tied up the other. So far, this was fucking uneventful.

“Who else is in this mansion?”

The girl had a tear rolling down her cheek.

“Just the butler. And Mr. Whitehall. Some girl too. That’s all, I swear.”

Some girl? No one would talk about my girl that way, but right now, I needed to find her rather than punish some sad little cook. From the look of things, I didn’t think they were paid enough for this shit.

“Fine. Stay quiet and X here will make sure you leave with whatever back pay this guy owes you.”

The female stopped crying.

“Really?”

I nodded.

“Sure. You make sure I can find the girl, and I will make sure you get rewarded. You two fuck up? Well, it didn’t sound like he was going to be paying you anytime soon. Any idea where the girl is?”

The two of them shook their heads, but the guy seemed at war with a thought or two before he spoke.

“I heard the butler and Mr. Whitehall talking a while back. This is a part-time job for me. He can’t afford anyone full time. I overheard them talking right after I got hired. They had no idea I was there, it was all just happenstance.”

I pulled out my knife and started to clean my nails. That seemed to speed this story along.

“I… he was saying that things might be changing, and that he found a granddaughter. I didn’t understand much else, but something about a trust needing a blood-related female relative or something.”

I met Zeid’s gaze. He never cracked a smile, but when he did, it was that brain of his putting all the pieces together.

“Thank you, Jeeves, for the help. Behave for X here.”

X was already digging around in the fridge. Of course he was.

“Call when you find her. I’m gong to have a little snack with my new friends,” X said.

Neither captive seemed to think any of us were friends. X had the scary as fuck market cornered.

“Great. So, Jeeves? If you were this pretentious prick, where would you hide a girl?”

He was quiet, but his eyes darted here and there before he answered.

“There’s a fake wall in the office upstairs. I don’t know what’s back there, but I saw him and that butler once going in on one of my rounds. Start there.”

“Grandpa, please explain to little old me again what these papers are.”

His face was getting pretty red.

“You know the leading cause of death is heart attack, right? Is your arm numb? Your face is getting pretty sweaty.”

There was a man in a sweater vest standing next to him, but there hadn’t been any introductions.
