I rubbed my temple.

“Destroying an innocent woman isn’t a hobby. Her father is dead, even if you weren’t invited to the funeral.”

This was growing old, and I was getting nowhere.

“Look, how did you get her uncle to go along with all this? And why? We don’t need their company.”

He was studying me, but he wasn’t going to see much.

“Ah. Now you ask some good questions. While you were off running all the clubs and stuff thinking I can’t do anything, I was off trying to understand the Rossi family. It wasn’t hard to find this delicious little scandal. Turns out one of the wives of an investor that has oddly disappeared has a long history of unfaithfulness.”

Well, shit. My brother did have his skills, didn’t he?

“And she just divulged that there was this uncle for what?”

My brother got up and went over to his little bar. That seemed about right.

“Want a drink?”

I shook my head no, not needing to have anything inhibit my decisions tonight.

“Women will do a great many things when they get the attention they want. Perhaps Emilee will be easily swayed if I had the chance?”

My nails ached as I dug into the expensively padded armrests.

“I doubt it. Just leave her be.”

He threw back two fingers of the rum in his glass.

“Perhaps. Anyway, I took a play from your book and found the right judge to declare a mistrial or some bullshit. Strange how all the evidence just disappeared. You know how that works.”

“Right. I do, but I am surprised you knew,” I said, now wishing I had that drink. “So what? He’s out and now what? He can’t just take the company, and Emilee is smart enough that he’ll have a hard time killing her off.”

I was upping her security if Parks didn’t.

“Oh brother, you might have the muscle, but you are really short sighted. Let me handle details of this whole thing and you just do what you do. She’ll be left with a shell of a company when we’re done with her.”

The sound of my fist slamming down on the desk filled the room, and I swore at the unintentional reaction.

“Geez. I’d thought you’d be happy. Dad would be happy. Probably. The bastard never liked me much.”

I’d heard enough. My brother was an idiot if he thought he could control someone like this uncle. Something smelled rotten, and I wasn’t sure where it was coming from right now, but I would figure it out.

I walked past several guards into Emilee’s apartment. Every face was one I recognized, just as it should be. Good. I dialed Emilee’s number and waited for her to answer.

“Answer the door,” was all I said. A moment later, the door opened, and my beautiful butterfly stood on the other side looking rumpled and fucking gorgeous.

“Did I wake you?”

She yawned.

“I mean, when you told everyone to shoot anyone who let me leave, they all took it really seriously. Parks didn’t even try to help. I almost wasn’t allowed to sleep in my own apartment.”

The little night shirt she had on was far more sexy than it should have been.

“Are you coming in or drooling over me at the door?”
