The chuckle behind me told me Roman found me amusing. The guy, however, his eyes teared up and obvious fear and confusion were all he felt right now.

I held my hand over his eyes and then moved it to the side, trying to place him. Roman brought me here for a reason.

“Oh, I do know you. Strange, you looked right in my face at that meeting and told me you were supportive of the new direction of the company. What was that? A few days ago? Sorry, the snot dribbling down your face threw me off.”

Roman moved next to me.

“It was the day after you stopped talking to me,” Roman said.

I glanced up.

“Is this how you filled your time?”

He grunted.

“I didn’t ghost you. You said I was using you. I didn’t know what to do with that. You weren’t altogether wrong. So, although I’ve been buying up investors, I was cleaning up the company.”

Roman’s weight shifted as I ran the tip of the knife over the calf of the guy. He had pants on, so it made a fun little gritty noise, like a nail file I suppose.

“I was making the company safe for you.”

I paused and looked up at Roman.

“Safe? For me?”

There wasn’t much to be seen on his face. He was in business mode, I could tell. But this idea was new. He was protecting me?

Sexy.

“No one is fucking protecting you. Parks is trying, sure. But it’s not good enough. This trash was plotting against you.”

I looked up and to the left, just like I was taught. Block the damn tear ducts. But damn it, if that wasn’t just the sweetest thing I’d ever heard.

“We’re revisiting that whole thing later, but first, this guy. Mr. Walter, right? Is that what you said when you called me princess at the meeting? You were the one that said ‘aren’t you adorable, princess,’ right?”

His nostrils flared in response, but he didn’t mumble anything behind the gag.

“Yeah. I thought so.”

Mr. Walter’s eyes flicked up to Roman.

“Oh, no no. Don’t you look at him. Right now, I’d say he’s less scary than this adorable little princess. You see.”

I stood up and slowly leaned into him. I ran my hands up his thighs, the knife safely trapped in my palm, but not turned to cut him yet. Still, it let me run that blade over his chest, his shoulder, up to this neck, and maybe I nicked his ear.

“You see, although I killed Daddy, Roman’s been helping me explore my potential. And I’m pretty sure I’m the most dangerous predator. I’m the one no one suspects. So maybe I look like a sweet little kitty.” I paused and came back around to meet his eyes. “But I have claws.”

This time I moved to straddle him, and Roman grabbed my neck, yanking me back.

“Butterfly, you're mine. Do not touch him.”

I smirked.

“Don’t worry, Romy-poo. I just wanted to have a little chat with him.”

Roman yanked me closer and forced my chin up to him. He claimed my lips in a hard, punishing—or rather, a claiming kiss.

When he pulled away, his irises were darker.
