I pressed my lips together, debating telling him the truth, that I thought I was seeing our dead best friend in the flesh, but I thought better of it. If I told him that I was seeing things, he was just going to worry and ruin his back sleeping on my couch again. Convincing him I was fine after I moved had been hard enough; I didn’t want to worry him and everyone else.

“Oh, come on, I’m not that much of a hermit.” I sat back and crossed my arms.

“Ha! Yes, you are. It’s a fight to get you to go out anywhere.” Jon relaxed, moving to the chair next to me. He smiled. “It really is nice that you stopped by. You were just what I needed after today.”

“Mel said you were dealing with a pesky client?”

“Something like that.” He brushed it off. “Really, Wren, are you okay?”

“Yes, Jonathan, I’m okay. It’s just. . .” I sighed. “It's just one of those days I guess.”

“I know, baby.”

I tried not to react to the endearment, but chills ran up my spine. I couldn’t help but feel Kevin’s breath on the back of my neck. Hear his voice when it was said.

“Have you called the cemetery yet?”

“Yeah.” I pushed away the revulsion. “They still have the stone I picked out for him originally and are going to start working on it.” Jon reached out for me, and I took his hand. He gave it a squeeze.

“That’s good, Wren. That’s a big step. Alex would want that for you.”

I nodded, trying not to dwell on it.

“Jon, your next appointment is in the conference room,” Melissa said from the doorway.

Jon walked me out into the foyer.

“I love that you stopped by. You should do it more often.” He winked at me.

“Oh!” Melissa started. “Wren, I’ve been meaning to ask you to go on a double date with me!”

“Huh?” Her question took me off guard. Jon chuckled beside me like he already knew what I was in for.

“I promise, I tried to get you out of it,” he loudly whispered in my ear.

“Oh, stop it,” Mel chided him. “I met this guy online, and he wants to go out for dinner next week, but I’m too nervous to meet him alone, so I’ve been trying to convince Jon to ask you to be his date. I’ll text you the details, but I expect you there!” She pushed Jon into the conference room, and I was left there, shaking my head.

Of course, she would rope me into something like this.

CHAPTER 33

WREN

The hostess greetedme as I entered the restaurant.

“Good evening, ma’am, can I get the name of your reservation?”

“It's under Jonathan Smith.” I tucked my hair behind my ear and scanned the dining area. It was packed in here and too loud for my own comfort. The tables were all set with tablecloths, candles and wineglasses. I scanned the room, but I didn’t spot him.

Melissa had spent the last week texting me incessantly to make sure I was coming to her double date thing. I thought about canceling almost every day, but I didn’t want to disappoint her, and this was falling nicely into the “normalcy” plan I had been working at for ages.

Agesbeing about seventy-two hours, but I was on a mission to convince my brain that we were not going to let ourselves go crazy. And crazy is what I’d felt for the past two weeks.

I swore I could smell his woodsy amber scent again.

Jonathan had been thrilled when I texted him and confirmed.

I guess this meant I was his only double date option.
