And now Jon wanted to be a part of that with her.

If you aren’t going to make a move, then I will.

His words echoed in my head, flipping a switch in me.

With those words, I had realized just how possessive I was of Wren.?

She wasn’t my girlfriend, and I had never thought of her like a sister. She was always just Wren to me.??

Just a friend.?

Who I would burn someone alive for.??

Who I would start fights over when someone dared talk badly about her or upset her even in the slightest.

Who I would do anything for, just to see her smiling.??

She was smiling a lot these days.??

And Jonathan had noticed.??

I saw the way he looked at Wren when she wasn’t looking. And I saw the way he looked at me when he thought I wasn’t paying attention.

I had started to notice that Jon made it a point to invite only Wren to his family events now. His wording was always, you’re invitedrather thanyou’re both invited.

Jon didn’t dare say that the invite was only for Wren. We both knew she likely wouldn’t go without me. I liked watching him struggle with her; Wren didn’t have a clue that he liked her. She didn’t see people like that. She didn’t dissect everything that he said to get to the meaning behind it.

Wren wasn’t mine, and I had no right to interfere. If she wanted to date him, I should just stand aside and let it happen.

That’s what I should do out of respect for my best friend and her.

But I came to realize that I wasn’t going to stand aside and let Jon be her first. Or let him be anything more than just her friend.

I shook my head at the thought, but a part of me wanted to whip my dick out and mark her as if I was a fucking dog who just caught another trying to claim her.????

I shoved my hands in my pockets and went back inside. Wren was elbow-deep in suds, washing dishes while Jon was drying and stacking them to the side.

I looked between them and quickly realized that something was off here, but I wasn’t going to press whatever was going on. Wren seemed sad, and that made something itch inside me. Whatever it was, I wanted to fix it.

“Gav and Troy had to go, but we got the boxes in.”

Wren didn’t look my way. “Oh, okay.”

I picked up the plates Jon had been stacking and put them in the cabinet.

Suddenly, Jon went on a tangent about his schooling and how he was the top of his class.?

“That’s good, Jon. It sounds like you really love your classes,” Wren commented absently. Jon was two years deep into his law school now. We had seen less of him because of it, which didn’t bother me any.

Jon looked over his shoulder at me, a smile on his face as he dried his hands off. He walked over and clasped my shoulder.

“I’m happy for you, man.”

I raised a brow at him, confused by his behavior. He was acting like we hadn’t been at odds for a while.

“Thank you?” I didn’t get his meaning.

He leaned against the counter with me and gestured around the room. “You bought a house, got a car, have a job.” He folded his arms over his chest and looked ahead at Wren. “You aren’t getting your clothes from the senior center anymore, and you guys aren’t living from paycheck to paycheck. Now you’re taking care of your mom and Wren.”
