I had wasted too much time deciding, so I ran out the front door, ready to run for my life.

Then everything went black.

CHAPTER 49

ALEX

King and Queenhad no idea how to run on a leash. They spent most of their time getting tangled up together, forcing me to stop and unwind them.

So instead of running, we fast-walked.

I took a different route today, deciding I didn’t want to fight King from going into the water. He loved the water, but I didn’t want to spend the next few hours washing the mud off him and drying him. I wanted an afternoon of just Wren and I.

After last night’s events, we needed it.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the velvet green box I had found in my mother’s things.

I was surprised to find it; she had given it to me so long ago, and I had stored it in a shoebox of things I kept of my dad’s. It was still in there. I could only assume that everyone packed everything in a hurry, not bothering to look at anything. It was evident that Wren never went through the things. She didn’t even pull out my old clothes.

I was grateful to find it.

I remember the day Ma gave it to me. She told me one day I would find the woman I wanted to spend the rest of my life with and she wanted me to have it.

I imagined she wanted Wren to have it too.

She had been right. I did. But I’d never thought I would be able to propose to her with it. Wren had still been adamant on never dating at that time.

I had planned to give it to Wren as a gift one year. Nothing expected of her, but I had always wanted her to have it. She was the only woman worthy of my mother's ring, even if it was just a platonic gift.

King whined and raised his head in the air. He was such a mama’s boy, never liking to be away from her for too long.

“I know, boy, we are heading home.” I put the box back in the safety of my shorts pocket.

We made our way out of the ash trees, stepping over fallen tree limbs, and made it to the gravel driveway. King and Queen's heads both rose, sniffing the air, and their tails stood high.

“What's the matter with you two?” They started to tug on the leashes, whining and barking. My scalp prickled with unease, and I picked up the pace with them.

Alarm bells rang loudly when we made it to the gate that was wide open.

Everyone knew to always close the gate, coming or going.

I dropped the leashes and ran fast as I could.

Something isn't right.

The clearing opened up as the house came into view. In the driveway was a BMW.

Jonathan.

I ran into the already opened front door.

“Wren!?” I ran up the stairs and she wasn’t there. Back downstairs and into the kitchen, I saw the broken glass scattered across the floor.

King and Queen were on my heels, “Stay!” I commanded them like Wren showed me. I didn’t want them in the glass and I couldn’t worry about them and her.

A scream sounded from out the back door and it turned my gut.

Wren.
