He touched my cheek and drew my face back to his. “No part of me hates you, Princess.”

For days, I had been putting distance between us. I told myself that I didn’t want Rainn. Admitting I did would mean acknowledging that I wanted the other princelings as well—and I would sooner die than marry Cormac.

They came as a package, even if they didn’t think so.

My mother’s prophecy echoed in my head. When the five creeds meet over the divide of war, only then shall the lake know peace.

If I fell in with Rainn—with any of the princelings—I would be a slave to a fate written long ago.

A fate that I had run from since my mother had coined the name Mad Queen. I had done everything I could to avoid being seen as her daughter. Cursed by Cruinn's insanity.

I was trying so hard to be strong.

I didn’t want to be strong anymore.

I wanted one thing for me.

I had been guarding my heart and body for so long. What would happen if I let go?I wondered.

I closed my eyes, leaning forward before I could talk myself out of it. I pressed my lips against his. Rainn’s fingers trailed across my cheek as his lips parted mine before his hand tangled in my hair and held my head in place. The kiss deepened as if all he needed was my permission.

There was something desperate, animalistic in his kiss. Claiming.

We broke away from each other, two waves retreating before we crashed together again. My arms curled around Rainn’s neck to hold him to me, his hand buried in my hair. His body shook, and everything fell away.

We were together. We were alive.

All of the trivial things seemed to melt away, replaced by the heat of his body and the smell of his skin. Sea salt and sunshine.

I melted into his kiss as Rainn’s tongue swept my bottom lip. Rainn shifted his body, pushing towards me, his hands still tangled in my hair as he eased my head to the floor. Rainn settled between my thighs as he broke away momentarily, moving his lips to the seam of my jaw and peppering the skin with kisses. I writhed, feeling every inch of my body tingle and react. My fists clenched against the urge to reach out and pull him towards me—I didn’t want him to stop. I didn’t want to distract him. My head fell back, and I let out a low moan, feeling my cheeks heat as he kissed the tender skin of my throat. Moving down my body, his fingers left a trail of sparks. Skimming the thin fabric of my wet dress, Rainn’s hands were warm. I pulled my bottom lip between my teeth as his fingers feathered over the sides of my breasts, over the fabric. I arched my back and pushed my chest into his hands, but Rainn kept moving. His fingers trailed down to my waist, holding me in place as he rose and placed a reverent kiss on my lips, conveying everything he could never say aloud.

Don’t leave me.

You’re mine.

I’m yours.

Please don’t risk yourself like that again.

Fuck magic. Fuck Belisama.

You’re enough.

You’re enough.

You’re enough.

“Maeve…” He whispered my name, and his breath caressed the shell of my ear.

My heart pounded against my ribs as I squirmed. “Please,” I begged, unsure what I was asking for.

Rainn seemed to know what I needed, even if I didn’t. His hands traveled from the inside of my knees to the sensitive skin of my thighs. Forcing my legs apart as he got comfortable between my legs. His fingers grasped at my ass, and he kissed the inside of my knee.

“Do you remember when we met on the Skala Beach?” Rainn murmured against my skin before placing another kiss higher on the sensitive skin of my thigh. He moved up my leg, one painfully slow kiss at a time.

My brow furrowed, “I don’t. Not really,” I told him.

“The lakescreamed. The sound was enough to curdle the blood. It was the strangest thing.” Rainn said. “As if my other half was dying on those sands.”
