Thick chains secure the entrance to the old subway station. Vines grow from the damp earth and entwine with the rusty old chains. I shake the lock. It feels sturdy, and I have no idea how to pick a lock.

“Great, it’s locked, how are we getting in?”

“Let me try.” Khal, who is still green around the gills, grabs the lock and rips it off, pulling all the chains in the process. He pushes the door open. Dust, debris, and stale air hit me from the underground.

“After you.” Mrez smiles and makes a gesture toward Khal.

“Fuck no. I opened it. Our alpha can show us the way.”

“Step aside.” Draw takes my hand. “Let’s show them how it’s done, Ivy.”

I blink at him as we walk into the darkness.

There is no one else I would rather enter the gates of Hell with than these guys. Still, the area makes me want to turn around and leave.

“Can you feel the wards?” Draw whispers into my ear.

“I only feel like running away.”

“That’s because of the wards. They keep the unwanted at bay. We don’t need people stumbling on her by accident.”

That makes sense.

The abandoned subway gives me the creeps. I try to be as cool as possible as we descend the stairs. The small sliver of pale light that enters through the door from the streetlights fades the farther we go into the station. Thankfully my guys’ night vision is excellent.

Khal and Mrez run up from behind, laughing like naughty schoolboys.

“Fuck the wards,” Mrez calls out. “Ivy is one of us. She’s brave.”

His arm wraps around me and he kisses me full on my mouth.

We all walk down the stairs. Khal pulls a flashlight from his pocket and hands it to me. “We’ll keep you safe, so you can use it here.”

I switch it on and look around. The old stairs taking us down to the check point look like the teeth of some old giant, all chipped and broken. Pieces of junk have found their forever home inside the station. Old newspapers, a few discarded shoes, and a pile of something I don’t care to analyze.

“A rat.” The flashlight slips from my fingers, hitting the ground hard. “I just saw a rat.”

Mrez giggles. One of his tentacles slips around my waist. “My love, let me understand this. You’re not afraid of us, but you’re scared when you see a small rat?”

“Have you read1984? I had nightmares for weeks after reading that book. It’s not a joke. I hate rats.”

“Then it’d be better if you ride me.” Draw says it low and sexy.

“Here? Now?” My panties are moist just thinking about it.

“I mean, you can ride on my back, that way you won’t touch the ground. But if this place turns you on, the world can wait.”

I shove him aside playfully. Mrez helps me up on Draw’s back. My hands wrap around his chest. We leave the station and enter the tracks. I see more than I imagined I’d be capable of.

“How is it I can see better now?”

“You’re starting to develop a night vision, like us. It’s a mating bond thing.” Khal’s mouth is close to me it makes the small hairs on my neck stand up.

“Ivy, I have to shift into human form,” says Draw. “There’s a narrow passage we have to take, so you’ll have to walk.”

“Sure, I can do that.”

I do my best to summon all my courage, the same way I would before entering the room of an especially difficult patient who needed my care.
