Black spots appeared in front of my eyes as my anger morphed into an insatiable rage. “Stay away from her, Keir.”

“Make me,” he shot back, chuckling. The bastard hadchuckledat me and hung up.

I pulledup to the curb a block away from Fallon’s college, then hoofed it to Keir’s location. He’d been holed up in a café across the street most of the time, and I would’ve felt like an asshole for making him do it, but he’d made that jab about Fallon, and now I wasn’t feeling so contrite.

“You got a lot of fucking nerve,” I snarled, making his head jerk up.

Keir took one look at me, then back at his computer screen. “You smell like smoke.”

“Hazard of the job,” I said, my jaw still tight. “Just like being armed every second of the day.”

His dark eyes flickered to my face again, and he sighed. “Look, I’m sorry. I’m not interested in Fallon. I only said that so you’ddosomething instead of brooding and being a generally unpleasant person … well, moreof an unpleasant person. You were not so chipper to start with.”

He’d baited me? Fuck!

“Sit down before you scare away all the nice people,” Keir told me, indicating the chair opposite him. I looked around the café to see that everyone was staring at me—probably wondering when I was going to start that murder spree I felt like having when I thought about Fallon with anyone else.

I sat, my attention on the building across the road.

“Relax. Class doesn’t finish for another,” he glanced at his watch, “ten minutes. Did you fucking drive fifty over the limit to get here in time?”

“Fuck you.”

He held his hands up in surrender, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “Hey, sorry I fucking asked.” He dropped his hands and the smile faded, too. “You made the right choice.”

“And what choice might that be?” I asked, my tone a warning for him to tread lightly here.

“You’re going to tell her the truth. All of it.”

I hated that he could read me that way. Nobody else had been able to—just Keir, and I wondered whether his own military training had involved interrogation.

I grunted, not willing to give him a verbal answer because I knew he’d fucking … ah, shit, there it was. That shit-eating grin that said he knew he was right, and I should praise him for it. Hyperintelligence was fucked.

With that smile still firmly in place, he shut the lid of his laptop and tapped the center of it with his index and second fingers. “For what it’s worth, I think you’re doing the right thing.”

I glared at him.

He shrugged, completely unfazed by my outburst, and rose from his seat. “Good luck with her.” He walked toward the door but stopped and added, “And don’t hold back. On anything.”

Before I could snarl at him, he was gone. I watched him walk past the café window, and when my eyes shifted back to the college building, I saw her. Fallon was wearing a pair of tight jeans that hugged her curves and a white sweater. Her blonde hair was unbound, and my dick grew hard just thinking about having it spread all over my pillow.

I bit the inside of my cheek to stop that freight train. I sat there, watching her until suddenly her head turned in my direction and my heart seized in my fucking chest. She held my gaze, biting her bottom lip as she thought through her options.

My dick was a length of steel in my pants, and I didn’t give a fuck. Fallon was the woman I would always want. I reached into my pocket for the medallion, rubbing my thumb across its raised surface. I had to hope that my peace offering to her was well-received.

We were caught in the moment for a long time until finally, her shoulders set and her spine straightened. She started crossing the road, checking both ways more than once as she darted across the two lanes of traffic. I made myself stay completely still when she entered. I didn’t want to scare her off. I didn’t want her to take one look at me and run in the other direction because if she did, she would be taking my fucking black heart with her.

She took a seat in the chair Keir had vacated but said nothing.

Her blue eyes darted to my hand resting on the table, then returned to my face.

Inhaling deeply through her nose, she said, “What are you doing here, Orin?”

“I came to see you.”

“Are you ready to talk to me? To tell me the truth?”
