Because, fuck, she had looked beautiful taking my cock. Even thinking about it now made my body twitch and dick harden. My downtime between fucks was short, but this was ridiculous. My body craved more of her, but it wasn’t going to happen again. Yes, seeing her bound and at my mercy lit a fucking fire inside my heart. Yes, seeing her take my cock without complaint made me want to burn down the world for her on the off chance that I could keep her, but …

I knew she didn’t belong to me. And she never would.

One time. It was only supposed to be one time that we fucked.

You didn’t actually fuck her, a not so helpful voice echoed in my head.

I hadn’t penetrated her cunt, but I had penetrated her mouth. I’d fucked it and taken my pleasure, but only after giving her hers. I shook my head. It didn’t matter anyway. This was the last time I would be with her. She was too innocent for my world, and despite her telling me this was what she wanted, I knew it wasn’t sustainable. I didn’t make love. I fucked, and I fucked hard. A woman like Fallon deserved sweet and gentle.

She wouldn’t ever find that with me.

Dropping the towel, I was searching through my drawers for a fresh pair of jeans when there was a sudden pounding on the bedroom door. Sliding on the jeans, I pulled them up and did the zipper but left the top button undone. I opened the door. It was Keir.

He took in my state of undress, then tried to peer over my shoulder and into my room. I blocked him.

“What do you want?”

“There’s been a—”

It was then that the perimeter alarm went off, and any post-sex haze slid right off me.

“Breach,” Keir replied.

“Where?”

“Finnan wants you on the roof and covering the eastern forest.”

“I’m coming now.”

I left Keir at the door, striding to my closet, where I kept my cache of weapons. I opened the gun safe and pulled out three handguns and my sniper rifle and stand. As I emerged, Fallon was standing in the entrance to the bathroom with a towel wrapped around her. Her eyes were wide, and they got wider still when she saw the rifle slung across my bare chest.

“What’s going on?”

“Perimeter breach.” Checking over one of my Glocks, I handed it to her. “Stay in the room and shoot any motherfucker you don’t recognize.”

“Where are you going?”

“To defend the goddamned compound.”

I took one step away from her, then hesitated. What the fuck was I doing? I needed to go, but the desire to tell her to stay safe and I’d be back was overwhelming. With one final glance over my shoulder, I hustled out of the room and ran down the hall where the stairs to the roof were.

The floodlights were on, but there were still dead spots in the landscape where the light didn’t reach. Shots rang out in the darkness, the shooters giving away their positions with the flash from their muzzles. Laying down my rifle, I crouched to set up the stand, then mounted the gun. When everything was ready, I looked down the scope.

“Come on, you bastards,” I muttered as I settled in and waited.

The sound of shouts and grunts carried from the other side of the building. Some of my brothers must’ve engaged in hand-to-hand. I didn’t have to fucking worry about them though. They would look after themselves. All I had to focus on was keeping more people out.

A shot rang out in the direction of the fighting. Directly ahead, I caught the shooter in my sight—a flash of white from his hair—and pulled the trigger. The rifle recoiled, slamming into my shoulder and bringing back the familiar ache I had grown accustomed to while serving in the army.

Another shot was fired, and I shifted the rifle to where it had come from. I picked off that guy easily, too.

And another.

And another.

Seven more shots rang out, all of them hitting their intended targets.

Bringing down the rifle, I scanned the tree line, looking for any further movement.
